Might as well have one.

Joe Haden has huge ears. Do you think they help him cover receivers?

Marshawn is done at Buffalo.

Agureghian
04-22-2010, 04:33 PM
yea, but most people were projecting him in the mid first round not the top 10 picks...

The bills should have taken jimmy clausen.
Spiller at the bills is the end of Marshawn

On the other hand this has positive implications for Best's chances to go in the 1st round.

Marshawn will land on his feet.

San Fran just traded a 4th rd to move up to the next spot, from Denver.

I'm kinda hoping they don't pick Jahvid since I hate Cheatey Petey and the Seahawks already have Justin Forsett. Would hate to see 2 cal bear RB's get pushed down the depth chart in one round.

I usually follow the draft on ESPN.com, but I decided to watch the live broadcast this time and am finding it really amusing. I think it's funny how Kiper, Tom Jackson and Mort are making all kinds of nervous pee pee all over the floor with Gruden there. Let's face it, they have nothing to say comparatively. Gruden could just sit there and riff on his own, and it would be great. Berman's unfazed by it all, b/c no one has ever expected him to know anything. It seems he's reading half his material off 3x5 cards.....Not much to say about Steve Young. I think he's slightly brain damaged or prematurely senile. Hard to believe he and Gruden are roughly the same age....Uh oh, Jackson is wooping and raising his volume again -- you can almost feel Gruden grinning off camera.

Young's a smart guy but he can get a little lost on camera.

I'm scratching my head a bit at S.F. selections (disclosure: I am a fan, although I hated the Nolan era). Frank Gore has been productive for them and the problem at QB hasn't been protection. Hmph.

Joe Haden surprised me. He's not fast enough to get drafted that high and paid that much right away. Don't understand the pick.

Love the Iupati pick for the niners. There was a lot of chatter about the Raiders taking him earlier, glad to see he fell. Don't know anything about the guy the niners traded up for but glad they got who they wanted. I wouldn't have minded seeing Brian Price go to the niners. He's slow but can take up space and absolutely punish interior linemen.

Wondering when Taylor Mays will go and whether he'll be the 3rd safety off the board or not.

Are you sure you've been watching the games? Protection has been a huge issue. Will these guys address that issue? We'll see, but they definitely needed a second tackle (will Davis move Staley to the left or will he play RT) and if you watch Chilo Rachal early last year or David Baas over the last several years, you'll know that their guard situation isn't great.

Hopefully these guys prove to be upgrades over the other highly rated offensive linemen they've taken since Nolan first got hired.

6'4" offensive tackles and 5'10" defensive backs going in the first round. This sort of changes my mind about how big guys need to be to excel at these positions in college. I thought tackles needed to be 6'7", and defensive backs were best at 6'0" or taller in order to cover the big wide receivers. But I guess not. It affects what how big I think Cal recruits need to be in order to be successful in the PacX.

Congratulations to Tyson Alualu !!! And I thought Mel Kiper was very respectful of Alualu, just thought it was maybe a few rounds too high, but certainly deserving of the first round.

I'm a fan of Steve Young the player, so I'd like to agree, but there's too much evidence to the contrary. He's impossible to listen to at times (particularly on the Tolbert/Barbieri drive-time show). He goes on and on and on, gets tied in knots and uses the English language in a really peculiar way. It would be OK if he had interesting insights, but he usually doesn't. Takes him forever to get to the point, and it's usually obvious or indecipherable.

The few games I did get to see I didn't remember the protection being particularly poor, but it was an admittedly small sample size. Thanks for the insight into the picks!

Jahvid has just appeared in Mel's Picks, at #9, following the Greeen Bay pick at #23.

Green Bay took offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga to protect Aaron Rodgers. Bulaga is another 6'4" offensive tackle, the third taken in the first 23 picks. I thought offensive tackles had to be 6'7" in college and in the pros.

I don't see much advantage height provides an offensive tackle. Size, weight and strength, yes, but height? I'd think a lower center of gravity would be better. Plus, it will be that much easier for Aaron to survey the field :p

FWIW, 49ers were 22nd in the NFL in sacks allowed last year.

Height for a tackle is taken as a way of measuring their reach. THey need to be able to reach out and get theri hands on outside speed rushers and such. For a few years it became one of those coaches gospel truth that the "wingspan" of your tackles was a bit more improtant than footspeed.

Personally I always thought the reach was a way of compensating for being a step or two slower than they needed to me.

Best's history of injry made him being picked early always a bit of a stretch. RBs take a huge amount of pounding in the NFL and teams don't want to put a 1st round pick out there on a back who might not ever play a full season. I had a suspicion that Best was a high second round pick after his season ending concussion.

I doubted at the end, but I did predict he would be picked late in the 1st round.

FWIW, having watched the team fairly regularly, I did think the O-line was one of the weak spots of the 49ers last year, and in recent years. They're not that great at run blocking either; only Frank Gore's efforts make them look serviceable. In a general sense, I approve of them taking a lineman in the first round.

(The other weak spot is Alex Smith, but unfortunately the organization doesn't seem to have realized that yet.)

As someone else pointed out, it's more about the length of their arms so they can reach out and contain defensive ends and blitzing linebackers.

To give you an idea, here are the heights/weights on some of the first round pick left tackles in the NFL right now:

Michael Oher ("Blindside" guy)/Baltimore Ravens - 6'4"/310 lbs
D'Brickashaw Ferguson/New York Jets: 6'6"/310 lbs
Andre Smith/Cincinatti Bengals: 6'4"/335 lbs
Trent Williams (first tackle picked this year)/Washington Redskins: 6'5"/315 lbs
Russell Okung (second tackle taken this year)/Seattle Seahawks: 6'5"/307 lbs

You get the point.
