Will practice and play against D1 players on a regular basis.

Going from WA to FL is sure to make Cal fans raise an eyebrow, but Rorie has never given any indication that his commitment to Cal is less than 100% solid. He and DeCuire reportedly have a very strong relationship.

Not sure how the pg rotation figures at Montverde next year, but you'd think Ahmaad wouldn't make the move unless he had a good shot at starting.

Most of the Norcal elite teams were there (though don't know if all of the players showed up). Cal Stars (2nd overall) with Natalie, Kelli hayes, Mariya Moore), EBX Cowlings, Calballaz (Asha Thomas, Aisia Robertson, MaAny Mobley). Cal spark North (Bijanne Moore, Ayanna Edwards), and of course the top teams from SoCal were there!

A little weird not having Cal in the SR this upcoming week. Got me thinking to next year and what it might have in store. Next season will be very different...

A little weird not having Cal in the SR this upcoming week. Got me thinking to next year and what it might have in store. Next season will be very different with Jo and Lindsey gone. However, I think there are some real positives to look forward to...

1) The addition of Kylie Reed. Reed set the state record for hits in a season last year and is one of the top slappers in the 2013 class. Not only plays for one of the top travel teams but played for the # 1 HS team in the nation last year in Norco. Reed and Taylor in those 1 and 2 spots could be a headache for opposing teams. The addition of Reed can allow Chey to move out of the leadoff spot and into a more RBI producing role.

2) The development of a pitching staff. We have a lot of arms next year. 6 in total. It will be interesting to see how they are managed and what combinations will be used to throw off teams. One of the main reasons the combination of Thor/Anderson was so successful was due to their very different strengths/styles.

3) A year of experience. Many times this year Cal was starting an all freshman outfield. Khala Taylor had a phenomenal first year and Alvarez showed some flashes of greatness. I think these two in particular could have very good seasons next year.

Starting Day Predictions

1) 2B Kylie Reed
2) LF Khala Taylor
3) SS Cheyenne Cordes
4) 3B Danielle Henderson
5) 1B Bre Kostreba
6) DH Britt Vonk
7) C Victoria Jones (Will also get a nice break with Alleah Laxamana coming in)
8) CF Ashley Decker
9) RF Vanessa Alvarez

Some people might write off the Bears with Henderson gone but I think that would be foolish. If a few of the pitchers develop Cal will be in a good position to make some noise next year. If everyone stays healthy the lineup should be much improved, especially with the addition of Reed.

Went back and watched as much game film (80% were highlights which are not ideal) on both incoming guards.

Singer:

What I like:

- A strong 6'3"+ = good length
- His handle has gotten better and better. Big jump from soph to junior years and again last year. Can really use his left hand dribble and does not mind going either way
- For a very good spot up shooter, he can use his dribble to create space for himself and opportunities for teammates to great effect
- Very nice looking stroke and release on his jumper
- Advanced ability to use his body to penetrate and manipulate his defender. He's strong
- Plus vision and instincts. A smart player who plays both aggressively and in control

Developmental areas:

- Quickness and vertical are subpar for BCS shooting guard.
- Given the above, his handle needs to get even better if he's going to be able to penetrate in the paint and/or create mid range opportunities for himself
- He looks young in the face and body. I think he can bigger and stronger
- While his left hand dribble is very good, he prefers to finish exclusively with the right hand
- Defensive lateral quickness and positioning are works in progress
- He handled the ball so much in AAU and HS that it's unclear how effective he is playing off screens, moving without the ball and using pick and rolls

Bottom line: He's a true combo guard. Will definitely be able to handle the ball at a Tyrone Wallace level day one (perhaps even better handle than Wallace). I think he'll be a double digit scorer. His length + stroke and handle plus his aggressive nature translate into a scorer. Likely more as a spot up shooter than off the dribble but who knows how clever he can get with his handle (watch lots of tape of Stephon Curry, Mr. Singer). If he can figure out the defensive side of things, I think he can play and contribute as a frosh

Mathews:

What I like:

- Legit 6'2"+ with longer arms
- Strong, strong body that he knows how to use. A plus finisher despite average athleticism
- Very confident and plays the game with an innate toughness that spells future leader to me. Has some Dennis Gates in him.
- Not afraid to bang both in penetrating off the dribble, rebounding and playing defense. I project him to be a plus rebounder for a shooting guard
- He can shoot the ball from deep. Likes to take and make big shots in big games.
- Great presence and moxie on the court. An obvious coaches son. High IQ player. Hard nosed is a good description
- A pretty solid handle for a HS shooting guard. Not in Singer's class but definitely a plus
- He's got a knack for scoring from all over the court

Development areas:

- He has been viewed by some as a combo guard who can swing to the one. My take is that his handle has to get markedly better for this to be the case.
- Has a long release on his jumper, a lot of upper body movement to it which can result in inconsistency. Needs to tighten it up to get it off sooner
- He's quicker and jumps better than Singer but is not a BCS level plus athlete
- I like his defense in terms of using his smarts and strength but worry a bit about his ability to keep quicker guards in front of him

Bottom line: Another good get for Cal. His strength, intensity and smarts alone will translate well to the Pac 12. I think you'll see his skills continue to evolve and allow him to score in transition, slashing and as a 2nd option perimeter jump shooter. I wouldn't be surprised if he makes his mark as a fearless leader, defender, glue guy who rises up and makes plays when games are in the balance. I suspect he is more ready than anyone in the 2013 class to play next year simply because of his body, the level of competition he's faced and his coaching father's tutelage. I do worry a bit about neither he nor Singer having plus athleticism at a position where the value of being quick and explosive is not insignificant. That also being an area of challenge for Rorie exacerbates this concern for me. Hopefully, one or more of the three will continue to evolve their athleticism and Bird and Moute will fill in the gaps.

Chris Williams, Senior, Washington, was recipient of Ben Hogan Award as top collegiate golfer.

1. He wasn't even his conference's best player: Michael Kim = Pac 12 Player of the Year, teammate Max Homa = Pac 12 Tournament Champion.
2. It's debatable whether Williams is the best player on HIS OWN TEAM: Pan is higher ranked in both polls than Williams.
3. One can even make a case that Wiliams would be the SIXTH BEST GOLFER ON CAL'S TEAM!

Rumor bubbling up on the Notre Dame boards and down here in Los Angeles is that Eddie Vanderdoes, the 5* DT from Auburn (CA) will not end up with Notre Dame after all. Some kind of disagreement or issue between the kid and the school, unclear what it is... but it looks solid that he will never play a down of football for the Irish.

Talk now is about where he'll end up, posters on both the USC and UCLA boards seem to think he'll end up a Bruin, who were among the finalists for his services along with Alabama and USC.

Curious to know if the kid will contact Cal or if Dykes and staff can get in there and make their pitch. Could be a huge pickup.
