Looks like Cal continues to "prepare" in the same old manner as previous years, with kids underperforming at Regionals. It's almost like some kind of a disease. Maybe someone can do their PhD dissertation on that???
The new vault coach Chris Smith is a good guy.
But Tony isn't going to give him any money to recruit with.
Tony just doesn't care about the pole vault. So don't think that August Kiles will be showing up at Cal just because his prep coach is now going to be volunteering his time at Cal. Kiles is being offered scholy money from a number of schools. He's a very bright kid too. But don't look for Tony to be offering any money to a pole vault recruit anytime soon. He just doesn't believe in giving money to a "one-event" athlete. He'd much rather give a scholy to some distance kid that will also run Cross Country in the Fall. The funny thing about this is that many of the distance kids that Tony has had over the years (like Ghebray and MichaelCoe) never ever "doubled" at Pac-10's. They wound up being "single" event athletes.... just like a pole vaulter. At least the vaulters under Scott Slover scored a ton of points at Pac-10's, unlike the middle-distance and distance guys that ran for Tony. I think that Matusak once got a 3rd in the 1500m at Pac-10's in 2010 and Colin Jarvis won the Steeplechase one year before his coming down with colitis. Other than that, there have been a ton of distance runners that Tony has recruited AND GIVEN MONEY TO that have totally failed....
Scott Slover was only a part-time coach and making a measly $28,000 a year.
He put his heart and sole into the Cal program, and Tony really didn't give a rat's ass.
I'm good friends with Scott and have the utmost of respect for him as a coach, a family man, and as a professional in his career. I could go on and on about this, but its long been water under the bridge. Suffice to say that Tony did not treat Scott with much respect at all.... and he viewed the pole vault as some kind of "Circus Act" that could not be counted on.
I agree wholeheartedly with your dissatisfaction in seeing that the XC Roster still isn't up! One really has to wonder if Coach Sandoval is the man to really get things done with this program. They didn't make the NCAA's in XC last season . . . and if that happens again, I suspect that Sandy Barbour isn't going to be very happy, no matter how competitive the Western Region is with Portland, Cal-Poly, Santa Barbara, etc. I mean afterall, how difficult is it to spend 30 minutes on the web to UPDATE the XC roster??? Does assistant distance coach Ann Detmer not know how to use a computer?
Meanwhile, with Coach Slover gone from the program, I'm hearing that potential recruits like Katie Zingheim ( Granite Bay HS ) are heading elsewhere. It's too bad, because Zingheim was the perfect Cal recruit and is actually currently coached by one of Coach Slover's former pupils, Katie O'Hara. She'll be vaulting over 13' consistently during her upcoming senior season in high school, but probably heading for Stanford now.
