    Splits:
    Simone - 53.36
    Abbey - 52.56
Dana - 53.18 (solid after contesting the 100 fly semis earlier)
    Katie - 52.79
Ledecky and Vollmer are both faster than Missy in the 100? Anyone know Missy's best 100 time this year?

    54.24, 11th @ Trials.

Think 54.24 from trials. She's been around the lower mid-54s this year. Quoted as having never felt better/stronger but her endurance seems to have come at the expense of her speed with all the extra volume work mapped out for her by Todd.

Missy has been the fastest 100 free US swimmer for a number of years (consistently topping out in the lower-mid 53 range, busted out a 52.99 relay split from a flying start @ Shanghai 2011) in spite of not being a sprint specialist like Abbey & Simone, partly cos Team USA has been behind the global sprinting powers for a while now with very few managing to dip into 53 territory until this year at trials (Jessica Hardy won the 100 free @ 2012 Oly Trials in 53.96, no one else went below 54 sec back then).

Furdette Simone who's been touted by many as the future of American sprinting seems to have also hit a bit of a wall in the lower 53 sec area even with her redshirt to focus on LCM training down at the Farm, her PB remains at 53.25 from her relay start @ Pan Pacs 2014 (which some critics claim was aided by drafting off Cate Campbell in the next lane). OTOH Abbey under Coley Stickels appears so far to have a greater upside, succeeding in consistingly dropping her times...

    W 100 back : Heat 4 - Kathleen

    W 100 breast: Heat 3 - Yvette (HKG)
They may not be Golden Bears, but cheer on Katie Meili in Heat 4 + Lilly King in Heat 6 if you're Team USA ... Viktoria Gunes (TUR) in Heat 5 if you're Team tedbear

    M 100 back : Heat 3 - Ryan

W 400 free : Heat 4 - Lauren (NZL) - will no doubt be the Katie Ledecky show, as will tonight's finals session...watch out, WR?!

M 4x100 free relay: Heat 2 - USA (Anthony will be in the prime anchor slot, guess fastest one from prelims will then join Nathan, Phelps & Dressel tonight)

I know she is more of a 200 Breast and 200 IM swimmer, but I'm surprised Gunes is not predicted to Final in the 100 Breast.

Baker qualifies first for 100 Back semis (58.84), Smoliga sixth (59.60).

Sooo happy to see little bean kill it (and that look of shock when she looked up and saw her time on the board haha) - yet another massive PB for her, and joins Missy as the only American woman to have pioneered it into 58 sec territory in a textile suit!!! (Natalie did bust out a 58.94 in the medley relay in Beijing, but that was in a LZR suit)

Thleen will have to get into low 58 sec range to realistically stand a chance of medaling (have to qualify first from tonight's semis)...but Kathleen's currently on an upward trajectory, soo encouraging to see Baker basically hold form on her back half (she's always been quick on her front half), which will be the key as she progresses through the rounds and faces off against the likely podium contenders (Seebohm, Hosszu, Nielsen, Wilson etc).

Olivia had a strong start, but her time will need to come down in the next round this evening.

Gunes qualifies 13th; my girl Finn Jenna misses qualifying @ 17th.

Murphy moves onto the semis as the 4th qualifier in the 100 Back.

1st day final results pretty well on projection by swimswam with Kalisz slight improvement with silver instead of bronze. However we (USA) already in the hole in the w100 fly final where we were predicted for a silver & bronze with the loss of Worrell. Have to make it up in the other final events tonight! Go Bears and USofA!!

David Marsh: "If anyone sees @KathleenBaker2 's other ear ring on the bottom of the Olympic pool - pls grab it..@NBCOlympics"

NBC Olympics: "We'll review the footage. #EarringSearchParty"

This just in...we can now all breathe a sigh of relief for Thleen Bean, as she'll have her pair of good luck charms on her when she faces the big test in the semis tonight

David Marsh: "Michael from Reuters found it! Thanks!"

    ------

Alyssa Marsh: "All of you better be on your computer or tv watching my girl @KathleenBaker2 swim her first race at the Olympics"
"I'm shaking KATHLEEN WENT SO FAST GUYS 58.84!!!!!!!"
"SHE IS TOP SEED FOR SEMIS"

    ------

In other news, Lauren missed finals after her 4:07.90 in the 400 free, ranked #14 overall. Yvette placed 32nd overall after her 1:09.56 in the 100 breast. She has been as fast as 1:07.69 back in April this year.

As mentioned by BD, we'll have the privilege of seeing Ryan display his considerable chops as the #4 seed in this evening's 100 back semis as he (hopefully) progressively builds on his solid 53.06 prelims swim.

Anthony will/should be earmarked for the 4x100 free relay finals lineup tonight, after anchoring with an authoritative 47.65 - fastest split on Team USA this morning (yes we all know that he's a front half sprinter, but that first 50 was an insanely blistering 21.68 that instantly wiped out AUS' lead at that point in the race!).

Surprising (in a way) development - Anthony won't be on the relay tonight after having anchored with the fastest American split @ prelims. His slot will go to Ryan Held instead. Well if Team USA does medal tonight, at least Anthony will deservedly share the award.
