Oooh that would be a smashing dream come true if Kathleen could carry on the tradition and make it as a 100 back Olympic Champion 4 times in a row (Missy in 2012, Natalie in 2008 & 2004)!!!

But first things first before we all get too carried away - even if Seebohm the massive favourite coming into Rio didn't quite deliver (along with some of the other top contenders) in that 1st semis heat, finals could be a different story altogether.

Kathleen will now have to dig deep and somehow find it in her to somehow drop her time further down into the mid to low 58s in less than 24 hours for a realistic chance of gold (can't believe we are all starting to realise and entertain this as a potential outcome haha) - a seemingly impossibly tall order perhaps, but bloody proud of her amazin' achievements up to this point, no matter tomorrow's outcome!

Thleen's definitely on the right path though, with that huge PB yesterday & today to earn her spot as the top seed going into semis & finals ... the lil underdog who twice now has risen to the occasion ... establishing herself as the 2nd fastest American backstroker ever (after Missy).

Noticed NBC was all over Smoliga today prior to the race with their little piece on the photogenic dawg, with barely a mention of Baker until it was obvious that our Dream Teamer was going to win her semi ... well maybe they're saving that for tomorrow's final? After all, Kathleen's challenges with Crohn's would make for quite an emotional piece of storytelling, which would be right up NBC's alley!

At any rate, a thoroughly satisfying session tonight for Team USA & s !!!

Dana's bronze in the 100 fly when most had reckoned that she was retiring after London, with so little time for the required training in the Olympic cycle, after having become a proud mother to boot

Ryan & Kathleen owning it as the top seed in their events! All the medalists and those advancing to finals for Team USA.

Katie Ledecky's WR - expected perhaps, but still very impressive

Oh, naturally topped off with that heart-pounding relay at the end...

To conclude my meandering ramblings, I'm an even bigger fan of Lilly King after this lol - some may prefer to let their pool performance do all the talking, but personally I feel it's time for athletes to bravely express their for-too-long-suppressed frustrations over the whole doping situation and the politics surrounding it:

Penny's delivered big time, would be seriously surprised if she became an NCAA swimmer. Can swim for a Canadian college as a pro.

Murphy's a serious stud. Didn't qualify first in prelims, didn't stress about it, and calmly returned to qualify first into finals. Certainly didn't diss his competitors after the race, but was far from surprised either.

Love Baker, but she's a little goofy. She was shocked by her prelims time, but held it together much better after semis. Would be pleasantly surprised if she wins gold, but bummed if she doesn't medal.

Cool to see Nathan and Phelps so stoked.

Better than Missy, Camille or Tom this morning, sad to say

Camille placed 29th with her 1:59.71 in the 200 free. Her PB = 1:58.78 from 2015 Winter Nationals.

Tom's 1:56.93 in the 200 fly ranked 20th which fell 0.21 sec short of advancing to finals. PB = 1:55.09 from 2014 Nationals, went 1:55.81 @ 2016 Oly trials.

Missy's 1:57.12 actually wasn't too bad of a swim for a prelims session - as a reference, her 1:57.62 morning heats from London 2012 ranked 3rd overall, and she squeaked into finals with a 1:57.57 from her semis four years ago. However, Missy didn't look super sharp this morning (still riding low in the water), and keep in mind that the world has got much faster in this event since the last Olympics (at the top end at any rate)... Think Franklin will have to bust out a time in the low to mid 1:56s tonight just to get to finals.

On the plus side, this first swim will have hopefully helped shaken the cobwebs out of her system, and there isn't that very tough 200 free/100 back double to worry about this time round. Even if Missy isn't quite her old self in the pool these days, personally feel that she should have a 1:55 mid in her to at least place in the upper-middle of the pack in finals, though a medal's not looking too likely for her here (hope events will prove me utterly wrong though!).

Siobhán's cracking performance in her unseeded heat was really something, her previous PB was "just" a 1:58.27 from as recent as June - not sure if she can drop much further than this morning's 1:56.91, but trimming off half a sec may do the job and get her onto finals.

Yes, Tom made the team in both 100m and 200m fly; he's better at the former.

With a 200m + event, energy management through the three rounds is crucial. Tom's time would have semifinaled in London 2012 and even Kazan 2015. It was a full second faster than his prelims swim at Trials. Because he swam in the earliest of the circle seeded heats, he didn't know what time would be needed to semifinal until it was too late. He split his race today similarly to how he split them in prelims/semis at OTs. It just didn't work out this time around. Most of the prelims races have been ridiculously fast. Tom will be fine for the 100m fly later in the week; fingers crossed.
