On the other hand... BAKER! Silver! Must (ashamedly) admit that I never pegged Kathleen to make the Olympic team, but so impressed with her speed going into semifinals and finals. Silver!!!

Two 1:57's?? Could her relay leg in the finals of the 800 be in jeopardy?

Commenters on SwimSwam seem to think so. Talking about perhaps adding DiRado or Runge in lieu of Missy

Swim Swam comments on Missy and Teri are always brutal. Durden and his boys are well respected; Teri and the women's team, not so much. A shame since the articles are generally pretty good and objective.

Props to Lilly and her Pops. Lilly's got Larry Bird Southern Indiana swag. Putin's gotta be pissed.

Teri should make all her breaststrokers dress up as lobsters.

Wouldn't be surprised if we later found out that Hosszu is enhanced.

Wow think I'm literally speechless & emotionally drained after screaming non-stop at the TV screen the past 2 nights of the swimming that I don't have much more to add to everyone's comments

My heart really went out to Missy ... then Kathleen's incredible gutty swim more than made up for my sadness - esp when we got to witness her post-race expressions of joy & tears!! ... followed almost immediately by studly Ryan making a statement with that textile world record of his which was a mere 0.03 off backstroke legend Aaron Peirsol's suited global mark (Murphy will get another chance leading off the medley relay on Sat) ... as if that wasn't enough, all the tense drama (no I'm not talking about Le Clos' stare-down bout with the GOAT ) in the W 100 breast where the world was alright once again at the end of the race (well, almost - my preference would have been a Lilly-Katie-Ruta finish...but I'd take this one for now hehe).

The iron lady has been tearing it up for the last 3 years or so. Kind of hard to believe they wouldn't have found something by now. ..but then there's Lance Armstrong.............

Kathleen Baker and Ryan Murphy Follow Their Own Paths to Olympic Medals

Marsh realized that Baker, dealing with Crohn’s Disease that she would make public in July, needed more recovery—he built more rest into her practice schedule—and greater specialization.

Marsh convinced Baker to put all her eggs in one basket—the 100 back. At Trials, she would not even compete in the 200 IM or 200 back—the event in which she first qualified for a senior national team in 2014.

Baker broke out of her slump in prompt fashion with when she posted a lifetime-best time of 59.39 to qualify second for the final at Olympic Trials behind Olivia Smoliga.

Things weren’t perfect for Baker at training camp—Marsh admitted that she had some setbacks with injury and illness during the month the U.S. team trained together—but everything came together in Rio, when Baker led the way through both prelims and semifinals with identical times of 58.87.

In the final, Baker finished three tenths behind gold medalist Katinka Hosszu, but a silver was more than satisfying for someone who came into the meet with few expectations of winning an individual medal.

And after the battle with Crohn’s and the struggles in her first year of college, the moment was even sweeter.

“Knowing something could be taken away from you definitely makes you appreciate it more,” Baker said. “I’m loving every single minute of this, having the meet of my life at a perfect time.”

The paths that Baker and Murphy took to the podium in the 100 back seem wildly divergent, but these two Cal Bears each had a plan that was executed to a T. They had expectations to live up to, and they did so. For each, the moment meant something special because of the other players involved.

Came across these, er, interesting reader comments that sound a bit far-fetched...but then again, you never know...

"I wrote that Missy can not train with stanford coach, but last month i think she trained with Greg Meehan. He changed her stroke to classic, that it is not suitable. She just sinks in water."

"It seems Missy drifted towards the Stanford swimmers during the training camp. I wouldn’t be surprised if she trains in Palo Alto after Olympics."

"many stanford swimmers have problems with free stroke. classic stroke not for Missy she needs straight arm stroke. Such amount coaching mistakes is unacceptable for best swimming nation."
