Baldwin likes what he sees at Cal

Here's a story we did with Baldwin, talking about what he has to sell at Cal, how the new staff is jelling and what his thoughts are on the roster he's inherited at Cal: http://bearinsider.com/news/story.php?article=2365

Hate to be a pessimist, but weren't there stories about SD being pleased and surprised with the talent at Cal when he first got the job?

Are there 21 players on academic probation and will they lose double digit starters before or early in the season like in Dykes' first season?

Coachspeak... No coach is ever going to be completely honest when assessing the talent with which he has to work.

Darn. You sound just like Dykes. The #1 excuse maker in all of college football!

If you don't think the situation changed from when he first made his comments about the talent to week 3 in the season, I don't know what to tell you.

    That's just an honest assessment.

But this is about Baldwin, not yet another pointless debate about the 2013 season, or any season prior to this one.

There were also stories about how pleased and surprised Tedford was at Cal's talent back in 2002 when he first got the job.

    Your cynicism is lovely.

Baldwin has got to be thrilled. Think about this for a second...he beat WSU with guys that we DO NOT RECRUIT. Of all the hires, this is the one that could be an absolute game changer.
    Go BEARS!

Yes and on the offensive side of the ball he did well. But what's good is that the HC is a defensive guy this time. What's also good is that we have essentially 3 head coaches and a good mix of veteran and young assistants. I like that we are mix for guys like Manoa with Tui involved. New things are happening.

dykes inherited a decent amount of nfl talent, some positions were bad and depth was lacking.

just look at the nfl wr's, nfl running back, nfl tight end, #1 draft pick that was already committed at qb Flounder inherited

This. Compared to how Sonny recruited and where he came from he did inherit a talented team.

"You almost have no excuse not to win here."

A lot of us have said this from day 1. And even if some don't believe it the coaches better and the better be able to convey this optimism to their players and especially their recruits. I only wish Baldwin would have left off the 'almost'.

For those that commented without reading the story, Baldwin talked much more about being happy with total package at Cal and the type of character and intelligence the players' possess and their hunger to get better, more than physical talent, since he's only seen film so far.

Two thoughts. First - was there any doubt we have plenty of offensive talent on the roster? We are still pretty stacked at receiver and have plenty of talented (if inexperienced) QBs as well as a few good RBs. Second - he's coming from EWU and has been in FCS for a long time.

This is a good example of a coach saying all the right things and there's nothing wrong with that. Plenty of great coaches use coach speak. Also to Moraga's point, the is mostly about the situation generally at Cal and the type of staff and environment Wilcox is assembling. The talent piece is a sidebar.
