Thread: 2017 Menís NCAA Championships (Swimming & Diving)

After six swimming events, it appears that the Cal men will be fortunate to end up 2nd or 3rd. Texas has performed unbelievably so far. NC State and several others look to be strong competitors. In two events, Cal set a record but finished second and fourth place, respectively. The competition is fierce and is NOT from other Pac 12 schools. Maybe things will change as the meet progresses but the Cal men are either much weaker than the Cal women on a relative basis or the men's teams across the country are much tougher...Anyone know the answer? GO BEARS!

S71, thanks for your observations. I compared last years' team scoring to this year's, and I think we scored within 2 points of last year's Days 1+2 total. We got a few more points in the 50 (Sendyk, Lynch, Jensen compared to none last year) but less points in the 200 IM (Josa DQ vs. Prenot A final and Pebley B final). Relays are scoring about the same as before. Day 3 is usually the Bears' best day due to their 100 stroke depth.

There is definitely more parity on the men's side, due to the fewer number of available scholarships balanced against roster sizes. Think of it like the salary cap in the NFL; 9.9 scholarships spread amongst 30 swimmers is not very much to go around for top-end talent. On the women's side 14 scholarships spread among 25 swimmers (related to Title IX; there are more scholarships available for the women's team, but there still aren't enough athletes proportional to the student body ratio), which makes it a little easier to stockpile top talent on a few teams.

"Second DQ for Josa. Not sure what a "Non-simultaneous touch" is. "

On the turn or finish, hands must touch the wall at the same time. rare call at this level.

I thought the double butterfly kick on the other DQ was a head scratcher as well. Not supposed to call it unless it was "propulsive," as opposed to a natural undulation due to the pull down.

Very rare call. Guys brush their fingers on one hand against the wall on breast and fly turns now. It is supposed to be obvious to be called.

Not a good meet for him.

Was reading some of the comments on swimswam, including the 2 DQs in this meet, this would make #3 this year. All for different reasons! Wonder if lack of training with the team this year were the reasons for his DQs? Does D-2 have different rules too? Hang in there Josa!
