as part of a pilot program to help increase the number of women competing in 3x3, USA Basketball invited teams from the Pacific-12 Conference to compete in the 2017 USA Women’s 3x3 National Tournament. Teams expected to participate are the University of California, University of Colorado, University of Oregon, Oregon State University, University of Southern California, University of Washington and Washington State University.

I am not aware of 3x3 competition. 3 players per team?

What does USA Basketball hope to accomplish with 3x3 play?

sorry, I am very uninformed it seems.

What are the rules? In college intramurals at UCSB between 1967-1971, 3-on-3 tournaments were held for boys annually. These games were played in half court settings so some different skill sets came into play...For Cal women if the same rules applied, Kristine Anigwe would control the boards and block shots. She would need to improve her passing accuracy for 3x3 ball so that she could quickly pass the ball out to the top of the key to Asha Thomas or to the corner for Mykalya Cowling which "clears the ball for a change of possession"...The outside shooters can either launch their shot immediately or pass it back inside to KA. Micole Cayton could drive to the basket for layups or pass off to a teammate for an assist. She could also sharpen up her three point shooting.

Think of the movie "White men can't jump" where they played in 2x2 tournaments. It works the same way w/ 3x3. GO BEARS!

Thanks for the links. Considering who we sent and who the other teams sent, the results are sobering.

We got beat by teams in our conference (e.g by Oregon 20 to 6) who didn't send their best players and we finished 2-4.

Despite all the hoopla on social media, we did not do that well.

OR did send their high-scorer, Hebard, and best shooter Bando (Ionescu was also scheduled to go but was cancelled for some reason).

The USAWBB site has inaccuracies about the sched/results, but assuming you're right that Cal went 2-4 (which makes the most sense; they did make it to the semifinal round though) that means that Cal lost twice to OR's less-than-best, in games without coaching....

Maybe the takeaway is that Cal actually outcoached OR in the regular season, playing them even in 2 games -- when they had their best?

There is an additional factor in the USAWBB article that would help explain the 20-6 loss, when all of the other games were close: Anigwe was out after taking an elbow in the quarterfinal match.

What I read on the USA site was that the Bears were 4-2 not 2-4. They got defeated by Washington 20-6 because they played a player short since Anigwe was elbowed in the face in the previous game and didn't play against Washington. So it's not quite as disastrous as it was made out to be. It was Washington that beat the Oregon Ducks. Just Go on the USA 3 on three site and they have the details and some highlights. Oh,by the way, Decosta made the USA under 18 team that's going to China this summer.
