A recent Chronicle obituary said "Every Cal sports fan knows the meaning of suffering."

49 runs allowed in last 3 road games. Truly awful pitching staff.

Well, all the starting position players except one from last year are gone, and he's injured and not playing. At least 7 players from last year were drafted, including the Pac-12 player of the year in Brett Cumberland, and one of the very best pitchers in the country in Daulton Jeffries, whose injury effectively derailed Cal's once-promising season. In addition to Jeffries the other weekend starting pitchers from last year are gone. So, Cal is starting with inexperienced players in a rebuilding year. The handful of BI posters who even pay attention to baseball know this, even the ones whose only interest is making posts calling for the ouster of David Esquer (the Cal coach, for those who don't know). Cal has not had much success historically in baseball and really took a hit when the program was almost eliminated in 2011. Evans Diamond has been upgraded but still pales in comparison to the rest of the conference. So, not to defend the coach or the program or resort to "We're Cal and this is what happens" there are reasons for what is happening this year.

Went to Sat's game. Exciting game but not as exciting as Friday's walk-off Grand slam! Team plays unbelievable at home but this young team still trying to learn to play better on the road. Ten out of last 17 games will be on the road.

Your assessment is correct. Before Grand Pre came back. There were 8 first year players starting in the lineup, not counting the young pitching staff. Like you said, all those on here who don't know but want to bad mouth the coach don't know what is going on with baseball. This team needs to learn how to win on the road, and if you knew anything about baseball, having a lineup of first year players, that comes with time. Just because you can play at this level, does not mean you come right out and just do it.

The remainder of the season will be a test for this young squad. They need to put it together on the road.

Cal split the first 2 games in seattle, loss friday 5-2 and won yesterday 7-3. Friday's game 2-2 until bottom of 8th where Wash came thru with 3 runs. In the game frosh Andrew Vaughn hit his 12 homer which leads the Pac-12. Wrap up game today at 1:05. Game streamed live http://pac-12.com/live/university-washington-2

Cal's sweep of USC at home last weekend is even more impressive in that top-ranked Oregon State lost at home to the Trojans on Saturday, 7-5. Go Bears!!!

I'd say pitching was the reason they lost, not the AD.
