OT: UC Berkeley tucks its tail between its legs...cancels speech by Ann Coulter

"UCPD had learned that certain groups responsible for the violence that played out at the Milo Yiannopoulos event in February and the Free Speech Rally in Berkeley on Saturday planned to make an appearance at the upcoming Coulter talk, according to an email from UC Berkeley spokesperson Dan Mogulof."

    This was especially stupid:
"In their email, Biddy and Sutton said the campus had first learned of Coulter’s appearance on campus “through the newspapers.” They requested that before student groups commit to hosting events on a specific date, they collaborate with the campus to find appropriate venues."

This thread would be better titled "OT: UC Berkeley Does the Smart Thing and Doesn't Become a Battleground for Competing Idiots"

They shouldn't but they should let her speak. Which means the UCPD needs to figure out a way to keep those idiots from starting chaos.

Admittedly, I have no idea how they do that without causing a bigger ordeal. But I'm not in law enforcement.

No one is stopping her from walking onto Sproul Plaza and giving her talk. If she doesn't show up it's because she's not getting paid.

If departments or Professors invite anyone on campus they want to speak in the interests of scholarship, they should be admitted on campus. If student organizations want to invite opinionistas like Coulter or Rachel Maddow then they can hold the event off campus and pay for it. I assume Coulter charges a hefty fee. Where does this money come from?

In defending the cancellation of the Big Game, "UCPD had learned that certain groups responsible for pulling donations and making really mean posts on the internet planned to make an appearance at the upcoming game,” according to an email from UC Berkeley spokesperson Dan Mogulof. “We can’t guaranty that there will not be any micro-agressions leveled against UC administrators, and their safety is paramount. This is not silly.”

Given her profile and its likely security needs, they prob got money from some 3rd party. Their operational funds come from ASUC, which comes from the students, but it's not a lot.

Anyway, Fox News now has the ideal Bill O'Riley distraction piece.

If true then the University shouldn't get stuck with all the wreckage and costs to put on this show
