Murray was getting a lot of press (in Canada) around this time last year. He led his HS team to an upset win over Kelly Olynyk's team (Olynyk just finished his freshman year at Gonzaga) in the provincial finals.
He played in the All Canada Classic last June - with the likes of Olynyk, Tristan Thomson (Texas), Manny Arop (Gonaza), Cory Joseph (Texas) and Maurice Walker (Minnesota). The Vancouver Sun had a big story on him around that time. As I recall, he was rumoured to be looking at Gonzaga and San Diego State.
I didn't hear much about him this past season. I think most people figured he would go to Gonzaga. They have snagged the top guy out of western Canada three of the past four seasons (Rob Sacre, Bol Kong, Manny Arop), and, especially given Goodson's struggles this season, many figured he would end up there. The Gonzaga boards indicate that the Zags backed off. Perhaps they are going to go another year with Goodson and then make a big push for Kevin Pangos for next season.
Anyway, FWIW, Barry Hayes (Canadian recruiting expert) has Murray listed as the second best shooting guard in the Class of 2010, behind Cory Joseph and ahead of Jahenns Manigat (Creighton).
Wow if he works out as well as our last Murray that played Cal hoops, we're gonna be fine. Sounds like "upside" is a good term for him. Comparison to John Wall, wow. But I've tempered comparisons ever since someone hailed JA as the White Michael Vick. Howd that turn out for you?
Kinda reminds me of Jerryd Bayless. I'll take that!
I checked out an interview after a game his high school team won and he's well spoken too. A good get for Cal! It's been a good week with Tyson and Jahvid getting picked in the first round and now one of the top recruits from Canada picks Cal!
Here's a post from that board from someone who seems to have seen him play:
"I'm a little late on the is one.
Emerson has all the game it takes to play D1. He was the leader on his B.C. Provincial winning high school team while in grade 11. He was a 1st team all-star (and many felt the tourney MVP over Kelly) and will be (along with a healthy Mike Lewandowski) one of the two most individually dominant players in BC in 2009-2010 at least in my (sometimes not) so humble opinion.
His game would be akin to, god I hate to say it, A-I....he can hurt you from anywhere on the floor...he has the speed and control to take it to the hoop but can also hit a pull up jumper for 2 or 3 at the drop of a hat. He is creative and extemely fun to watch and his atleticism allows him to play whatever the defense gives him.
He was invited to the U19 tryouts at age 17 and I do not think it was his ability or maturity that kept him off the team, only his age as he will get another chance to play U19 in 2 years.
Emerson will play D1; it's just a matter of where.
In the FWIW category, he comes from the same high school (St. Georges) as Bol Kong though his history, his present and his future are are lot less mysterious.
Sounds good. I like the idea of a PG with some size.. I haven't been able to watch the vids here at work but the general tone of the articles and posts sounds positive. There are now a lot of back court options availalbe to Monty. It would be great to see a skilled big be the next add...
I like what I see! Can handle the ball very well, and is extremely athletic. Seems like he also has a pretty decent shot. Far and away looks better than Smith! I would play him at the point from the start, have Jorge at the 2, and Crabbe at the 3. Jorge can shift to the point for a bit with Rossi and Franklin putting in some time at the 2. Smith and or Franklin could spell Jorge and put in a few minutes to bide time at the point. MSF and Kamp to start up front with Solomon and Max coming in. I can also see some times where Solomon might put in a few minutes at the 3. Should be a fun team to watch.
