    Joe Kapp Question?

For personal reasons is there any proof besides just lore that Joe Kapp actually said that phrase, "The bear will not quit. The bear will not die."

And when was this said, if it's actually correct.

Very curious, need a correct answer.

An assistant coach, John Cooper (?)...said it first and Kapp repeated it.

As I understand it, Joe Kapp wasn't the person who coined the phrase but he was the one who made the phrase famous after BG '82.

    Bill Cooper

That was the guy...I think John was the coach at Ohio State...

He was also head coach at ASU. Cooper was 2-10-1 against Michigan.

Whether he was the first to say it, I do not know.

But he did say it, I believe I first heard him say it shortly following the end of the game.

I thought I remember him using the statement on the radio when he was the color commentator for Cal games.

He also said of his passes, that he like to deliver the ball with the laces up (to make it easier to catch).

I think I heard he said it at the press conference after the BG.

    And the correct phrase is:

    The bear does not quit.
    The bear will not die.

(even though it's incorrect on Joe's own web site)

Wow, thank you, I thought I was the only one who remembered it as, "The Bear DOES not quit; the Bear will not die." I was almost starting to think I had been wrong.
