    Eleraky Not Cleared

From our old friend Rafa Juc:

Sami Eleraky ('93) who signed w/ California hasn't been cleared academically by NCAA. Likely prior to join Golden Bears will remove to JUCO.
Not good news if true. We need some rebounding up front. By all accounts that was something that Sami could bring to the table immediately.

Could he join us after one semester at a JUCO?

And the stunning inability of the staff to recruit continues.

Well at least Howland is in meltdown mode. Take some cold comfort in that.

    No huge surprise...

In one of the articles linked from this very board, he said as much when he signed... something to the effect of he hoped he would be eligible this season, but wasn't sure... could possibly need to attend prep school for a year.

And maybe that's the silver lining: He attends prep school and doesn't lose eligibility, all the while he gets stronger and works on his game in the US, then steps into the Thurmanator's spot next season.

Yeah, real bummer but Eleraky's now a long term plan. Looks like he'll need to do 2 full years of jc unless he's able to accelerate it and get his GED in less time. Spring's not an option at this point.

He'll be at Barton in the fall. Not sure why prep school won't work. Must be an NCAA qualifying issue rather than just units.

    It does seem strange.

So now that opens up a scholarship this year and next?

At least it sounds like Thurman will be able to play minutes.

Marcus Lee becomes even more of an important recruit now.

If was not academically qualified to enter Cal as a first year player, he would have to earn his AA before enrolling at Cal, which generally means two years.

    ---generally....

Is he now doing this in the SF Bay Area or some other place, or not pursuing it?

MB is Elaraky's academic deficiency incomplete work in HS? If so maybe a GED would solve the problem as long as all his other HS-level work met NCAA qualifying standards and Cal admission requirements. If his HS body of work does not meet Cal's admission requirements, Sami would be a non-qualifier by Cal's standards, and he'd have to obtain a qualifying AA degree would be his route to Berkeley. Is that your understanding, too?
