Frustrating Volleyball season...What happened?
I am not volleyball expert but have enjoyed watching our bears perform at a high level these past few years. And maybe I have taken our performance as a given.
So what happened this year? I ask out of ignorance, not placing blame.
I went last year's NCAA game in person and it seemed like we should have beat NC (I know the team was tired...and we semed to lose it after the light was broken). We started last night very flat, but once we tie the score, it seemed like we let dow. It seemed like we had the ability to beat NC and get some revenge. Was it skill or will?
It seemed like there were many plays where NC shot to an open spot and we didn't seem to do that as much.
I hope next year is much better and we don't face NC again. Congrats and thanks to the seniors for their dedication...hopefully their participation as student athletes will make them very active and supportive alumni for years to come.
and several players out for the season!
That's what happened.
Lineups were not certain one match to the next, people having to play out of position, etc etc.Younger players having to learn and develop on the court instead of at practice, behind a skilled experienced player.
The Cal lockeroom was a MASH unit basically this year.
one injury is one thing. A ton is a whole nuther matter.
Long season in this condition.
Congrats to the seniors for playing well for us.
Congrats to the roster for supporting and cheering and working hard.
Congrats to the staff for keeping things together.
We all need to show up at the team banquet in Jan.
True Blue Golden Bear
It was a disappointing season
Its seemed like any time someone posted on volleyball, is was about injuries. Team had several big victories, but its hard to keep momentum when players keep going down to the injury bug. BTW, not only are a lot of the players worthy of the watch list on Growls, but the matches are exciting, with incredible athleticism and skill on display. Really a good watch.
i have never been to a cal vb game although i did watch the penn state ch game on tv with carli lloyd
so no real strong feelings about vb...have been told by a golf buddy whose daughter plays/ played for the bears that coach feller has not recovered from the 2nd place finish and is abusive with the players...also has conflict with his asst coach that he hired...apparently they have even tried counseling...the players are grinding away and not having fun (of course, it is a lot more fun when a team wins)
might just be one parent's take...
Watched the post game interview with Feller and his players. Lots of "We went through a lot of adversity this year" comments. Injuries emphasized, but the feel was not good with the HC sitting there. Is something wonderful unfolding here?
i'm not a volleyball expert either, far from it. so, fwiw, i say two things:
1. no more carli lloyd, i.e. what a difference a leader and setter makes.
2. we had an asst coach (sam something, i think). with his arrival instead of a single offense, a multiple offense was implemented, with markedly good results. after his second year (i think) he was hired as an hc elsewhere. i told a friend (who attends the games) that we should have made sam head coach and let feller go elsewhere.
i have no inside knowledge, just observation and gut feeling watching games on tv or via streaming video.
Assistant Coach Sam Crosson
was at Cal 2 years and left after the 2011 season for a HC job. Besides Carli, we lost defensive specialist Meagan Schmitt from that great 2010 team that made it difficult for the 2011 team to run Crosson's offense as effectively as before. IMO, we'll need another outstanding recruiting class in 2014 to complement the incoming frosh to get back into the Pac-12 top 3 or 4 teams.

Players have heard it all, at least from that source.
Next year Cal has a good recruiting class that could have been great, except for a relatively late decommit by the #6 recruit from Texas, who switched to Texas. Done after most of the other blue chips had decided. But John Kerr, the basketball Bull's, daughter is coming at libero, a new setter and a highly regarded MB, also from Texas.
There will be plenty of parts for Cal next year: a new backcourt player, hopefully the return of MB Schoenweis, the aforementioned setter who could be in a Stanford type 6-2 this year with the returning setter, or not;, and a couple of players who can play multiple positions. If injured Neumyer can return ( wouldn't count on it) the staff will have plenty of options.
Besides setting ..passing was a major problem last yr. Is Robin Rostratter electing not returning for a 5th year?
