Pebley Crushes 100 Backstroke Field In Bolzano

    Matt Josa, Scott Haeberle, Pebs

Several familiar American faces who competed earlier this week at the 43rd Annual Nico Sopio Trophy made their way from Genoa to Bolzano, Italy for another annual swimming competition. Madison Kennedy, Jacob Pebley and Matthew Josa each found themselves on the podium amidst the estimated 700 athletes racing across 20 individual contests and 2 relays.

Ervin Emerges Victorious In Bolzano, With Pebley & Kennedy Also Golden

The handful of American stars made their marks on day 2 of the Balzano Swim Meeting in Italy, led by 2016 Olympic Champion Anthony Ervin. Absent from yesterday’s events, the 35-year-old sprinter topped the splash n’ dash field today, winning the 50m freestyle in a time of 21.65.

Ervin, Josa and Pebley teamed up with Cal swimmer Scott Haeberle for an American men’s 4x50m freestyle relay at the end of the meet as well. The foursome came out victorious, taking the relay gold in a time of 1:29.19, the only squad to dip beneath the 1:30-threshold.

Pebley won the men’s 50m backstroke in a time of 24.23, while Josa earned another silver behind Italian stud Piero Codia in today’s fly event. Yesterday, Codia got the upper hand in the 50m distance while today they finished 1-2 in the 100m race. Codia got his hand on the wall in 51.77, with Josa finishing in 51.86, both representing the only sub-52-second swimmers of the race.

Madison Kennedy did additional damage in Bolzano as well today, following up her solid 100m freestyle win from yesterday with a gold in the 50m. Her time of 24.56 handily won the event, signifying the only female swimmer to delve into sub-25-second territory.

Is Haeberle a pro now? Great guy, but out of eligibility. Assumed he'd retired from swimming.

Off Deck, Dec. 16, 2016: Yuri Suguiyama on Short Course World Championships

Just days removed from returning to California after the Short Course World Championships in Windsor, Canada, Yuri Suguiyama called into Swimming World TV for a special Friday edition of Off Deck.

Suguiyama, in his fifth season as the associate head coach of the Cal men’s team, served as the head coach for the American men at worlds. In this episode, Suguiyama described how his role as a head coach on the U.S. staff was different than his previous stints as an assistant and explained how he evaluated his team’s overall performance.

Suguiyama also discussed a handful of the athletes he coached who were on the team: Tom Shields, who finished second in all three butterfly events in Windsor; Jacob Pebley, who won two silver medals; and Josh Prenot, apparently an aspiring butterflyer.

COLEMAN’S CARPOOL: 10 MINUTES IN THE HOT SEAT WITH DAVE DURDEN (VIDEO)

Dave Durden is getting ready for his 10th season as the head coach of the Men’s swim team at the University of California, and what a decade it has been. The past 8 seasons, Cal has placed in the top 2 at the NCAA Championships, coming away with 3 NCAA team titles. Dave and Yuri saw 6 of their former or current Cal bears make the 2016 Olympic team, with almost all of them garnering medals at the games. He’s one enlightened dude, and when you talk with him you get a sense of how this level of greatness comes so consistently for the guys back in Berkeley.

Dave was kind enough to carpool with me in Mesa at the Pro Swim recently, and I got to pick his brain about his coaching background and insights. I realize I merely scratched the surface with a guy like Dave, who has such a plethora of knowledge and experience in this field. However, I think you can gain just as much from how he says things and how he handles himself as you can from what he’s saying. Dave is humble, he’s calculated in his actions and words, and he certainly doesn’t see swimming the way one might think.

That’s why I put up most of our interview, a whole 10 minutes. I think a lot of what Dave had to say was really interesting, and the way he answers the questions is just as important in my opinion.
