2014 Golden Goggle Awards (Mon Nov 24, NYC)

    ----------

2014 Golden Goggle Awards - Monday November 24 - New York City

The 11th annual Golden Goggle Awards will be held on Monday, November 24, 2014 at the fabulous New York Marriott Marquis in Times Square!

Since its inception in 2004, the Golden Goggle Awards has generated more than $2.1 million dollars to support the USA Swimming Foundation's mission of saving lives and building champions―in the pool and in life.
We invite you to join us for this premier swimming awards event in celebration of our 2014 U.S. National Swim Team and support the legacy of giving back to the sport of swimming by purchasing a table or seat.

Video will appear here when live:

START LISTS for 2014 Short Course World Championships Released

    http://swimswam.com/start-lists-2014...hips-released/

    ----------

Scanned thru the above entry list just now, here are the women's events where one or more baby / alumna s are entered.

Have listed their SCM seed times, along with the top 3 + slowest + non-Cal Team USA qualifiers, for reference.

Really excited to see how Amy, Abbey & Kathleen will fare against top flight international competition, and rooting for them to light up the pool with some electrifying swims even if they aren't expected (yet) to seriously challenge for a podium spot at this early stage of their swimming careers. Would be most happy to be proven wrong on this of course hehe! Actually if they can get past prelims into the semifinals (or even better, finals), would be a really promising accomplishment already!

    ----------

{EDIT} The Entry List has just been updated online (12/1/2014) to reflect the participation of the Aussie contingent, so I've revised the ranking/seeding list below accordingly...

    100m Back

    #01 - Katinka HOSSZU (HUN) - 55.34
    #02 - Emily SEEBOHM (AUS) - 55.47
    #03 - Mie NIELSEN (DEN) - 55.99
    ...
    #09 - Kathleen Baker (USA) - 57.59
    #14 - Stephanie Au (HKG) - 58.27
    #39 - Amy Bilquist (USA) - 1:01.00

    ...
    #76 - Roylin AKIWO (PLW) - 1:20.27

    #003 - Sarah SJOSTROM (SWE) - 51.93
    ...
    #006 - Shannon Vreeland (USA) - 52.51
    #027 - Abbey Weitzeil (USA) - 54.38

    #116 - Roylin AKIWO (PLW) - 1:20.27

    -------

    100m IM

    #01 - Katinka HOSSZU (HUN) - 56.86

    #10 - Melanie Margalis (USA) - 1:00.03

    ...
    #65 - Mayra-Linda PAUL (FSM) - 2:37.41

Trivia: Natalie's 58.55 in this event, from Nov 15 in Italy (incidentally now the American Record), would have seeded her #6 here, ahead of Caitlin. However by USA Swimming's qualifications criteria, she won't be eligible to compete in this particular event. However, we should hopefully see her contribute in a relay or two @ Doha.

    ----------

Note that the Short Course Meters format isn't raced very frequently in the US, so some of these seed times may not be all that representative, esp for the high schoolers who are competing here (unless they have previously participated on the World Cup tours abroad as part of the Junior National Team program).

    A few ad hoc thoughts:
    1) Kathleen will be fighting hard also to make finals in the 100m/200m back (seeded 9th/8th respectively). Hope she'll swim fast enough to rep Team USA in the semis at the least.
    2) Abbey's seeded pretty low in the 50m (19th) & 100m free (27th) as she'll be facing a formidable field, but I have confidence she will make one or both semifinals if she hits her taper just right.
    3) Amy's a bit of a wildcard/dark horse when it comes to SCM racing...she's seeded all the way down in the 100m (39th) & 50m back (45th), but definitely will be cheering her on for a pleasant surprise or two. Would be rather sweet if the coaches take a chance on Bilquist and put her on a relay or two if she's performing above expectations, possibly even have her swimming free instead of back on a leg...

Will be interesting at any rate to see how all their times here will translate to SCY (more accurate of a conversion than if it had been from LCM). This top level meet could also provide a useful indication as to the ongoing progress & development of our incoming recruits...a glimpse perhaps of good things to come next fall?

14 Storylines for the 2014 FINA Short Course World Championships, plus all the links you need

    http://swimswam.com/14-storylines-20...us-meet-links/

    Mini-storylines:

    5. Can Tom Shields rise to the challenge? Also in the butterfly races is Tom Shields, an American short course specialist who had his long course breakout last summer. Shields has been priming his short course meters speed with multiple appearances on the World Cup circuit, and took third overall while challenging Le Clos on a number of occasions.

    6. A glimpse into the future for American swimming: The American women feature a quartet of high school-age swimmers who could very well be a big part of the nation’s swimming future. Abbey Weitzeil, Katherine Drabot, Amy Bilquist and Kathleen Baker will all compete in Doha, and it’ll be worth keeping an eye on how they respond to the pressure. Weitzeil, Baker and Bilquist will swim together at Cal next year, while Drabot is currently a high school junior.

Just some quick updates, in a bit of a rush and haven't had a chance to look at results closely so may have missed some notables. As always this is heavily biased towards Team USA swimmers who were/are/will be s

Kathleen (5th, 57.11) & Amy (11th, 57.82) made it to tonight's 100m back semis, well done!!! Incidentally Amy's time was a very impressive 3+ sec drop from her seeded 1:01.00, and Kathleen also improved on her seed time. Let's cheer them on to qualifying for finals in an hour or so's time, won't be easy with this level of competition but they have the talent to possibly pull it off! Also in the heats of this event, Stephanie, repping HK, swam a 59.44 which ranked her 27th.

Tom Shields' 50.43 was good for the 5th seed for the 100m fly semis tonight, and helped Team USA to a 4th seeded spot in the finals of the 4x100 free. Caitlin also churned out a nice 4:28.43 to grab the 4th spot for the 400m IM finals (with Elizabeth Beisel right behind her with a 4:28.75). Oh, not to forget Natalie's creditable 31.16 that placed 27th overall in the 50m breast, an event she's not exactly known for!

Chris Plumb - 3 Dec, 11:57 am AST
Congrats to @amybilquist who has qualified for semi-finals in 11th tonight in the 100 bk

Amy Bilquist - 3 Dec, 2:10 pm AST
So excited to have the opportunity to represent USA in the 100 back semis tonight #Doha2014

Natalie Coughlin - 3 Dec, 4:17 pm AST
Pre-race mani & face mask. Game face on. Grrrrah! #Doha2014 #TeamUSA

    UPDATE from Swimswam:

    Women's 4x200m free relay

The 4th-seeded Americans have made two changes to try and close the five-second gab. Elizabeth Beisel and Kathleen Baker have taken the spots in finals that in prelims were occupied by Emily Allen (1:58.30) and Madisyn Cox (1:56.24). That helps the Americans keep pace with the above-mentioned relays, though a podium spot is still not a guarantee

    4) Amy's a bit of a wildcard/dark horse when it comes to SCM racing...she's seeded all the way down in the 100m (39th) & 50m back (45th), but definitely will be cheering her on for a pleasant surprise or two.

Will be interesting at any rate to see how all their times here will translate to SCY (more accurate of a conversion than if it had been from LCM). This top level meet could also provide a useful indication as to the ongoing progress & development of our incoming recruits...a glimpse perhaps of good things to come next fall?
{7:59 am PST} This just in...

Kathleen (57.25) totally killed it by qualifying for Thurs finals from placing 8th in the 100m back semis just now - clutch!

Amy (57.65) missed out on the top 8 with a 12th overall ranking, but still a strong showing that was encouragingly faster than her prelims time (57.82) which bodes brightly for NCAAs down the road. Her SCM time translates to 51.93 in SCY, with her 100y back PB having been 52.58 - so, over half a second's improvement here! It was also really cool to observe Amy seemingly lapping it all up with a "cheesy" smile as she walked out on deck after being announced - hey bae, you've made it to the big leagues now hehe!!!

12th FINA World Swimming Championships 100m Backstroke Women Semi Final 2

Damir, repping his country Slovenia, goes thru as the 4th seed in tomorrow's 100m breast final.

Caitlin (4:28.74) came in 6th in the 400m IM finals which Belmonte of Spain won in WR time (4:19.86).

Shields is into the 100m fly finals in the 3rd qualifying spot with a time of 49.91.

Tom also anchored the US Men's 4x100m free relay to a come-from-behind bronze medal (3:05.58 ) with a great 46.02 split (was fastest leg shared with Ryan Lochte).

Kathleen (1:54.22) was instrumental in catapulting the US Women's 4x200m free relay team from a last-place start up to 3rd by the time Katie Drabot was done with her 3rd leg. Team USA then finished up with Beisel on the anchor to ultimately a 5th place showing (7:39.48). Very creditable performance considering that our big guns, Missy & Ledecky, aren't participating in this meet! The Netherlands team just crushed China's old WR from 2010 (7:35.94) with an absolutely dominant win in a time of 7:32.85, which was over 4 sec faster than 2nd place China (7:37.02)!

Note that Kathleen's 1:54.22 split here, after adding half a second to allow for the flying start to make it 1:54.72, translates very roughly to 1:43.35 in the 200y free, which further improves upon her PB of 1:43.61, and solidifies Kathleen's current status of being the 2nd fastest in this event for March 2016 NCAAs, behind only Liz's best time of 1:42.13 from her freshman season (assuming Missy will be out of the collegiate racing picture by then as expected!)...

Had used the following conversion tool for the above calculations: http://swimswam.com/swimming-times-conversion-tool/

Tom Shields' 22.29 split on the fly leg helped secure the 3rd seeded position for this evening's finals of the 4x50m medley relay. Team USA's 1:33.25 breaks the American Record (as well as being faster than Italy's old WR of 1:33.65), whilst Russia's 1:32.78 is good for a new WR (though RUS has gone faster with a 1:31.80 back in 2009, but WRs for this event weren't recognized by FINA until 2013 I think)

Abbey demolished her 27th seed time of 54.38 to advance to the 100m free semis later tonight. Her 53.08 from prelims now ranks her the 9th fastest in the entire world class field @ Doha! Really great job baby !

Will probably be offline by the time the 4x50 Mixed Medley relay heats roll around towards the end of the morning session, but just wanted to note that Natalie is scheduled to anchor the free leg for Team USA, with 2 ex-furdies, Felicia Lee (fly) & Eugene Godsoe (back), as her teammates lol...

UPDATE: Natalie (23.55) anchored the US to a berth as the 2nd seed (1:38.78) behind GBR, in the 4x50 Mixed Medley finals coming up.

Caitlin also made it into semis in the 100m IM, her 59.94 seeded 11th.

Day 2 - START LIST (detailed)

    http://www.fina.org/H2O/docs/events/...ended_day2.pdf

    ----------

Team USA's 1:31.83 breaks their American Record of 1:33.25 from prelims this morning in the 4x50m medley relay. Tom Shields splits a 21.99 on the fly leg to help take us to a bronze medal behind Brazil's 1:30.51 WR win.

Abbey was unable to improve on her 53.08 prelims time after a slow start, and her 53.14 will not be advancing her to the 100m free finals on Friday in the 15th spot. There won't be an American qualifier in that final as Vreeland's 52.69 landed her in the dreaded 9th spot. However, commendable effort racing against the world's elite sprint competition, the experience will stand her in good stead for her promising future (Abbey still has the 50m free and a relay or two to come).

Speaking of relays, just learnt of an alumna bear (Natalie) passing the torch onto a baby bear (Abbey) in the anchor leg of the 4x50 Mixed Medley that's scheduled as the closing event in today's session. Quite an honor for Abbey!

Americans Swap Three of Four Legs of Mixed 200 Medley Relay
    http://swimswam.com/americans-swap-t...-medley-relay/

Kathleen did us proud by surpassing her 57.25 semis time & 8th seed to come in 6th (57.07) in the 100m back finals! Good job! Katinka Hosszu won the gold with a WR of 55.03 in that race.

Emma Reaney - 4 Dec, 10:24 pm AST
@KathleenBaker2 had identical races on purpose. We planned it. 8th to 6th. Added a lil then dropped a little. #roomieconnection

Alumnus Damir Dugonjič ended up 5th with his 57.06 in the 100m breast finals.

Caitlin's 1:00.19 in the 100 IM semis for a 12th place fell short of qualification for finals. Would have been interesting to see what Natalie could have done here if she had been eligible to compete in this event, since her recent 58.55, if she could have replicated that time, would have seeded her 4th for tomorrow's finals...

Yay, Tom Shields snagged the silver in the 100m fly finals (48.99), behind Chad Le Clos' 48.44 WR!

To wrap it all up, Abbey anchored Team USA's 4x50 Mixed Medley relay to a 4th place finish (1:38.16) with her 23.57 free split.
