Scholarship money is an issue in 2012 and going forward. Assuming that Teri's team is fully funded, the maximum number of scholarships she can offer is 14. All three current 2012 verbals are top 5 recruits AND from out of state. Teri is the Pied Piper (terrific coach and an even better person) and an Cal admissions slot is extremely coveted (more than 40K applicants turned away annually), but it's a lot to ask top five/ten recruits to pay increasingly jacked up out of state tuition (because Cal can command it) when they can get full rides other places. My assumption is that all three 2012 verbals (Bootsma, Pelton, and Driscoll) are full rides.
Would be awesome to pull in Tosky or Brandon too (if that what Teri truly wants), but every school in the country will offer Missy a full ride in 2013. Don't know the exact calculus, but seems like 3 top five/ten recruits per year (especially if they're from out of state) getting full rides with the rest of the money split among top 50 swimmers (with a preference for in-state swimmers-less tuition burden on swimmers' families) is the current balancing act. The other balancing act is how much scholarship money per class and per stroke group. Hence the concern about how much money is already allocated to backstrokers.
