Just read that UConn's Alex Oriakhi is transferring to Missouri. He can play immediately rather than sitting out a year because UConn isn't eligible for next year's tournament because of several years of poor academic progress rate scores.

So, if a coach leaves and a student wants to transfer they generally have to sit out a year. But if a team doesn't do well academically -- for which the program bears some responsibility, but so do the athletes -- they can bail without penalty. This doesn't seem right.

But what if said student has no involvement in whatever infraction(s)?

Why should he be penalized, if the penalty inspires him to transfer?
