Sac Grid Club EWU Run-Down - 09-10-2009, 12:07 PM

Big thanks to Gregory for calling-in and giving us a rundown on the D for this year. Thanks to JO at CCTimes for answering questions for the better part of an hour. He was very insightful and energetic, can't wait to have him back next year.

So what did we learn . . .

Ladner will be re-evaluated in three weeks. No other injuries are worrisome long term at the moment. Riley was not forgetting play calls, we're sending in two play calls and then adjusting to the sets. First time we've done this in a long while (if ever) and it appears to be a Ludwig-initiated/ Tedford-comfort thing. Don't know where Hydro came up with this, but if it's got some footing in fact I'm sure it will come up again. Taiwan Jones of EWU is a blazer, finished second to Jahvid in HS (I think it was Okaydo who has a thread for this if you want more). Lots more if any other attendees want to add.

SPECIAL NOTE: Wednesday before the $C game, the grid club is going to be throwing a Rocktober $C party at the meeting. Anyone interested, feel free to swing on by the Sterling. Cover will be small and well worth it.

TedHead, did Gregory say that thing about Riley's play-calling memory or Okanes? If it was Okanes, did he get that info through Tedford?

It was from Oak. He said he had heard nothing of the sort and had no idea where it came from. He found it implausible that this would be the case. Then he went on to talking about the changes in the playcalling - two signals coming in, etc.

Coach Gregory - 09-10-2009, 01:46 PM

Could you paraphrase what our DC had to say? Thanks 94.

Thanks for the update TedHead! I couldn't make it last night and was waiting for the rundown..Did Gregory mention anything about the run D that so many people seem to be worried about?

He's not worried, to say the least. Stopping Taiwan Jones is his new priority. One week at a time. Yada-yada. We were never threatened, so that played into the signal calling. He, like all coaches, sees room for improvement, but he did seem more confident than in years past - I'm reading into his comments a little there.

JO is exceptional, but he isn't exactly perfect. Case in point, he stated in his chat that he didn't think there was a dropped pass by the receivers, but I recall Boatang dropping a short pass from Riley in the 1st half. I hope he ask Riley about it to clarify, when he gets a chance...

Go BEARS!

If you're talking about that second pass by Riley on the first series, I would hardly blame Boateng on that. Riley threw that way too low and Boateng still got his hands under it (but it hit the ground first). Definitely not a drop.

EDIT: upon watching, there was another incomplete pass thrown to Boateng, but CB #6 (Wiseman) broke it up. Also not a drop.

EDIT #2: On our field goal drive, Wiseman broke up two passes before we had to kick the FG. No drops there.

FINAL EDIT: Riley's last incompletion of the game, the slant to Calvin, may have been dropped, but they don't show a good replay of it. It looks like a combination of tight coverage and the ball being thrown a bit too low for MC to catch, but if you really want to find a drop in this game, that's your best chance IMO. Either way, JO's recollection seems pretty solid. Definitely no meaningful drops in this game if the only one I can sorta kinda maybe find is by our sixth string WR in a 45-13 game.

So, no real discussion of our kickoff and kickoff return coverage issues?

We tried, but Gregory said that's Alamar's area, though he thought our coverage was OK considering it was the start of the season.
