Proof positive that any mediocre major league pitcher can rack up a lot of saves if they are lucky enough.

I still can't believe he's actually named Merkin. I wonder he knows what that is, and if he does, has he considered a different english name?

It's amazing a guy who can throw a ball at nearly 100 mph can't get 3 outs in the ninth without any damage being done. Somebody should teach him the cutter.

Mediocre is too harsh a word. As an Angels fan, he was very stressful to watch as a closer during a lot of games.. and the games he didn't save were complete goose-eggs, which gave rise to similar sentiments expressed by the OP.

K-Rod career: 2.30 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 2.93 K/BB
Brian Wilson career: 4.34 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 2.02 K/BB

K-Rod's 62-game season was a bit lucky -- it wasn't actually Rodriguez's best season, so the save total was mostly a function of him getting a lot of save opportunities (which are dependent on his teammates), not him being more dominant. He was still pretty damn good, though (2.24 ERA).

The really tragic part is they also gave up a young LH minor leaguer.

Yeah that would be one Francisco Liriano.
