Was that the #1 Cal TD run of all time?!? - 10-18-2009, 12:51 PM

I think so.
At least I don't remember another.

We were pinned behind our own 10.
They knew we were going to run.
Best went left, but it was jammed up there, so he cut back.
He made 3 defenders miss in a big scrum.
He broke another defender's ankles on one of the best jukes you're going to see in college football
He used his blazing speed to run another 70 yards
Riley had one of the best cut blocks you're ever going to see too
Best finishes the 100 yard dash in 10 seconds!

The Lynch TD vs. Stanford was another great run, but this one was better.

Rate the top rushing TDs in Cal history.

Chapman's against UW in '91 is up there somewhere... just for the sure electricity and ear drum splitting decible level it created at Memorial...

Chapman's run against Oregon in '93 was pretty big too. It was more of a wide open play, but really energized the fans and (speculating) gave the team the confidence it needed to shake off the horrendous start to the game and come back and win.

Those statements are related -- you'll see a better juke in Marshawn's run

Cal record is 98 yards - 10-18-2009, 02:08 PM

Bill Powell against Oregon State in 1951. It's in the media guide.

The fun part of Best's run was when he did the last juke and came free...there was that sense of....beep beep!...and off he went to the house

The Play was the best Cal TD of all times, but it was on special teams.

Igber's TD against Stanford - 10-18-2009, 05:59 PM

The one before half time that put us up 23-7. Huge TD emotionally, and also really fun to watch. Igber burst through the line but went in barely touched. Their D completely melted down. At one point during the run you can actually see one of the defenders running away from him. Priceless.

A lot of bests came from that game, of course, including several of the best non-scoring drives in Cal history. We f'd up a ton of scoring opportunities in the second half but ate clock better than that alligator in Peter Pan.

If you don't remember, you might not be old enough - - 10-18-2009, 06:04 PM

Bill Powell ran 98 yards from scrimmage vs Oregon State in 1951 - and John Wilson ran 96 yards in 1957 against San Jose State.

Best's 93-yard tally just beat out another Cal favorite - Joe Kapp - who chucked in a 92 yarder on a quarterback draw in 1958. (I saw the play).

Some of Russell White's TDs were highlight reel material. I have to say, though, Best has had quite a few all time favorite runs.

joe kapp ran 92 yards on a QB draw? wow! what are the chances that kevin riley equals that feat? zero, or less than zero? (no knock on riley, that's just really tough. I could only see the elite combo QBs like michael vick at his prime duplicating that feat these days)

I think the topic is on the subjective "#1 run", not the longest

The longest run ever... - 10-18-2009, 11:12 PM

as measured by clock time -- had to be the 85 yard screen pass to Oliver Hillmon against Oregon State in 1977.

It was thrown from the 15 and Hillmon was cornered three different times -- on opposite sides of the field -- but his blockers caught up and wiped out the interference till the next time. That play had to have taken two minutes off the clock and it seemed like half a quarter.

In my group, we still bring up his name every time we need a clock burning drive late in the game.

Best run #1 of all time? - 10-19-2009, 01:54 PM

Well, the Kapp run sounds like it could be in the top 3, and yeah, I meant best (not longest) run.

The Lynch run was great, but I would still put Best's run above his.

Right now I nominate Best's run as the best in Cal history!
