Helmet Nathan Longshore, must see - 07-28-2008, 07:53 PM

15 minutes of comprehensive highlights across three videos on youtube. The author is the same person who created the Javhid video on the other thread, and also wrote this impressive analysis of Nate: Nate Longshore: Setting the Record Straight. Here's the author's admission on the reader's comments section: Actually this post started as “My Apology to Nate”... I was one of those dicks that railed him on the rivals and scout boards and I though I would apologize and make him a Highlight reel… since none has ever been made for him. Kinda like a mix tape but less… um… romantic.

Here are the three videos:

Nate Longshore Extended Highlights Part Two
Nate Longshore Extended Highlights Part Three

Bluescriptcal Hey Cal fans, Go...! - 07-29-2008, 01:39 PM

Absolutely amazing. For all the supposed concern about the quarterback situation (see all the threads regarding Nate and Kevin on all the forums on all the Cal sites for the past 10 months), no one is willing to objectively analyze and have intelligent discussion like the poster in the link, or very few are willing to acknowledge that Nate is a very good quarterback. It's not that difficult of a concept. You look at weaknesses AND strengths for BOTH quarterbacks, not just strengths for Kevin and weaknesses for Nate, or not strengths for Nate with all the bogus caveats (you know, receivers made him look good, he had a lot of talent around him, we should have done better than a Pac-10 championship in 2006, he benefited from great O-lines, etc.). 250 views and no post? Is it that hard to provide a positive comment on our starting quarterback?

Here are some comments from the link above:

As much as we like to poke fun at Longshore for not exactly being Michael Vick and moving at the speed of the continental drift, he really isn’t that much of a statue. I’ll admit, I guess I forgot he’s got decent pocket mobility. I watched some of those highlight tapes of Longshore (specifically the 2006 clips) and he actually was able to avoid the pass rush pretty well and even scrambled for a few. Perhaps we’ve all forgotten a little bit that Longshore actually can sort of move around and run a little bit when he’s not injured?

For all of the Nate bashing that goes on (and we’ve all done it at one point or another) the major issue is that he played hurt last year. The second half of 2007 was terrible, I’m fairly certain we’re all scarred for at least a few years from it, but for anyone currently arguing against Longshore, what were your thoughts and feelings on September 2nd, 2007? I’m willing to wager at least a stadium hot dog that none of you had anything negative to say about Longshore after he beat Tennessee. Even more significantly, on the evening of September 29th, 2007 did any of you have a negative feeling in your body towards Longshore? When you found out he was hurt, were you excited or nervous that the #2 team in the nation would be without it’s starting QB? I’m guessing nervous, I know I was before the Oregon State game. Saying that he should be taken down with horse tranquilizers or that he doesn’t deserve to play or has already lost his starting job is foolish. The second half of 2007 was a huge mistake, but that doesn’t mean that the QB we were excited for to start 2005, we were happy with in 2006 and thought would lead us to a BCS game in 2007 is terrible and doesn’t deserve a chance to show CAL fans how well he can perform again.

The proof is in the pudding, watch the video and judge for yourself. Great footwork, good pocket mobility, excellent reads, good touch, and puts the ball in the hands of the receivers away from the defender. He will be a first day pick in next year's NFL draft.

Just had to respond to the header. I like the highlights though.

No doubting he can play when we are ahead - 07-29-2008, 05:13 PM

Nate has and will make plays. Anyone who watches Cal knows this. The concern is his ability to step up in close games and lead us to victory in the 4th quarter. He's a the QB version of a fair weather friend. Sorry, just my opinion.

Nate has looked great in the past.

The problem, as many people have pointed out, is that he was hurt last year. And yet he still kept starting!!!

Riley looked amazing at the end of the OSU game...when it appeared the game was out of reach he brought us all the way back. Then the big mental mistake....

But the following week we still controlled our own destiny. Nate brought us down the field, trailing by 3, with a few minutes left on the clock. The Cal fans were hopeful, the UCLA fans tense. And then Nate threw the pick that was returned for a touchdown...and the season was over.

It just got worse after that. A lot of people knew Nate was hurt and would've liked to see more of Kevin. But Tedford stuck with Nate...until the 2nd half of the bowl game.

I think the team gave up on Nate, but when Tedford stuck with him the chemistry went to hell.

It'll be interesting to see what happens this year. With the receiving corps gone does Tedford's decision to play Nate get more buy-in from the team? Or will Tedford be more open minded if Nate can't get the job done?

Just a small correction. Riley came into the bowl game in the 2nd quarter. If he had come in in the second half, we would of been down 35 not 21.

All I can say is, how in the heck can anyone start Longshore over Riley after all we know now? That's like saying you would go with Drew Bledsoe over Tom Brady some years back when Brady emerged.

About NL and the Tennessee Game - 07-30-2008, 11:50 AM

On September 2nd I felt (as I had been saying since the Sacramento State game) that NL was not an inspiring presence on the field. He puts up good numbers at times, and he was injured for the second half of last year, but despite all the number crunching, I have never been over impressed, and had the nagging feeling that he was always one play away from a big mistake.

As a long-time supporter of the program, I will be dissappointed if he is the starting QB on August 30.

Go Bears!!!

I think the fact the our starting WRs were benched in the first quarter made a difference in Nate's performance.

No, it was all Nate's fault. As were the three TDs scored by the Air Force offense.

This videos do reveal how much mobility Nate has when he is healthy. Check out what he does against Minnesota: not a brilliant runner, but hardly a statue either. During the 2007 tailspin, some on the boards were claiming that Nate had always been immobile and unable to make big plays, but these videos would seem to prove such claims wrong.

Don't get me wrong, I think Riley will ultimately be the better quarterback, but Nate Longshore is still quite good when healthy. The major problem is that he can't seem to stay healthy, not for inherent lack of ability.

I still wonder how much of Tedford's stubborness is due to:

1. Loyalty to Nate. Maybe he made a promise and is honor-bound to keep it? Some posters last year suggested that if that were the case, Nate should've done the right thing and released Tedford from that promise.

Easy to say, hard to do when a potential NFL career is at stake.

2. Bias against Riley/Belief in Nate? The most likely.

Riley made the HUGE mistake against OSU and I've heard numerous times how much better Longshore is at calling plays. I definitely think Longshore is the better "practice" QB.

3. Showing us who's boss. This is the one I would least like to believe, but would suspect is the most true.

There is no head coach worth a darn that listens to the fans or the media. But this can go they other way...when the fans and media are correct but you refuse to listen to them because you don't want to appear to give in.

Tedford is very smart, but he's also proud. I wouldn't discount this reason entirely....

I'm sure it's a combination of all three, plus others.

I'm sorry, but in your above post, didn't you just say that BOTH numbers 2 and 3 are "most" likely or true?

Throw in the fact that #1 and #3 are both crap, and the last sentence that says "it could be anything" and you have a wasted post. Well done.

Nice post. Even though I'm a Riley supporter, I'm one of those (crazy?!??) fans that thinks that we'll do fine even if Nate is named the starter. I think we too often forget that Nate was a really good QB up until that Oregon game, and we're only going back now and scrutinizing his mistakes prior because of the second-half collapse. I definitely remember being really worried for the OSU game when I saw that Riley was starting...funny how things turn around.
