Has Brenna Heater Left The Team? - 03-06-2010, 03:07 PM

Someone told me that this news was provided by assistant Charmin Smith during the chalk talk. She said the departure was for "personal reasons". I missed the first part of Joanne's pregame interview so I don't know if it was mentioned there as well.

Was anyone actually at the chalk talk? Any further elaboration would be appreciated.

Don't know details but I am not surprised after watching her early in the season.

As far as I could see, Brenna was not visible during the game, either, which startled me. Anger, youthful crisis, family crisis, health, protocol, Something Else?

(And BearBloke is heartbroken; he thought Brenna was so cool.)

If this is true I sure hope Rama can play next year. Sorry to keep bringing up Rama every week, but I believe her situation is relevant. Without her we will be very thin up front unless Lindsay can play some post. Either way I think this brings some urgency to recruiting a post or two for 2011.

She has withdrawn from Cal. Charmin cited personal reasons...

Too bad. We will have 4 solid posts next year so will need to recruit a post or 2 for 2011.... her departure actually evens the classes out a bit which isn't necessarily a bad thing (nor unexpected).

Liked Brenna and her style of play...wish her the best wherever her future may lead.

From everything I have heard Rama is healthy and playing great in practice. Hopefully that will continue to be the case and we can look forward to a solid, four-post rotation next year.

I can't say I'm shocked.

But I wonder where she'll end up?

I imagine Oregon and Gonzaga are options. Hopefully she'll be able to consider other Pac-10 options.

Bluescriptcal Lindsay needs to be a wing scorer next season... - 03-06-2010, 08:22 PM

After losing AGL & Vital, Cal needs to generate points from the outside. Sherbert (6'1") hopefully can play SF or SG. Afure Jemerigbe (5'11") seems more like a Tierra Rogers style player that doesn't provide an outside threat. When I've seen her play-she primarily drives to the basket for layups. Mikayla Lyles is finally the "dead-eye" three point shooter that I've been asking for since coach Boyle arrived.

I'm really concerned about the inconsistency of Laysia Clarendon's shooting from game-to-game. Today she is 0-8 from the floor and only gets 18 minutes. Gen Brandon, the team's top rebounder, is scoreless in 11 minutes. I have no idea what the substitution pattern is nor the offensive strategy is on this team. It was good to see DeNesha Stallworth compete hard against such a physical frontline today. Cal could have used Heater bangin' on the boards.

I will never forget the elbow to the side of Jayne Appel's head that Brenna Heater delivered in Palo Alto. Her physical nature is not matched by anyone else on the roster-that will be missed. This Cal frontline can be intimidated so I do feel that a big year from Rama N'diaye will be needed to be more successful in 2010-2011. Her height (6'5") is needed to match up against big teams like ASU & Stanford. Berkeley is not right for everyone nor is playing time optimal especially when a frosh player is away from home and hurt a couple of times.
It's understandable that she has decided to return home. GO BEARS!

Need 2 posts for 2011. Calhoun or Payne become very important, but Payne is probably LJSU bound. And we need a monsta. Cohen, Forthan or 6'5" or bigger. A space taker. Boyle keeps looking at speed. Don Nelson never won an NC.

Jeez, I keep capitalizing Speed(there, I did it again; Freudian?). Stanford will crush everyone unless we get players who can walk on them! Talking with some Stanford folks after the game and they think Duke will implode. McCallie is the wicked witch of the East. Look for a major bail, a la Stringer.

And we must keep a channel open with Marvadene. Ya never know!

I'm not that surprised, but I will miss her. I thought she was so cool, too, BearBint. But, if her heart's not in it here, then it's good for her and for the team that she get out. Does anyone remember who else recruited her? I don't follow the recruits so much. I hope she's made the right decision for herself, and I hope she finds success both on and off the court.

Earlier in the year, Erica Payne said her top 3 were California, Notre Dame, and Stanford. Her sister does play soccer for Texas though, so keep an eye on them.

Also, I didn't see this mentioned on this board but Berkeley's Brittany Boyd is considering San Diego State, California, Washington, Miami, Texas, and Kentucky.

I am very sorry to hear about Brenna leaving Cal.

Sometimes we get so caught up in the athletic part of "student-athletes" that we forget how challenging their lives can be. The impact of concussions and stress fractures do not begin and end on the court and maybe the difficulties became too overwhelming.

I had my doubts about Brenna's abilities early on but once she got healthy I began to see so much promise for a solid career here at Cal. She was one of my favorites too and I look forward to seeing her resume her academic and athletic career elsewhere. I hope she'll be able to eventually look back on her time at Cal as a positive experience.
