Duke Basketball Report Take on Cal - 03-21-2010, 06:42 AM

Here's a link to the game preview from dukebasketballreport.com which I've always felt delivered pretty reasonable perspectives on all things Duke.

One thing I didn't think about until I read this was that you have to assume that Johnny Dawkins has probably delivered a fairly detailed scouting report to Coach Shashefski.

Was Egbert Souse the patriarch of your tribe?

I believe WC Fields pronounced it: Soo say.

Actually, I think the Souse Family predates WC Fields even. According to Wiki, the song "The Goddamned Dutch" (aka "The Souse Famly" aka "Glorious" aka "Drunk Last Night" first appeared in 1927. And apparently, we aren't alone in celebrating it: Marquette, Wiliams College, the University Football Club in Perth, Australia and the US Navy all use it.

That article just proves how little East Coasters know of west coast basketball. BakBak is not eligible and Kamp hasn't played all year - and he doesn't mention the Omoke suspension. For "height," he leaves out MSF. The only insight is whether Dawkins has told Coach K something of merit.

Glad someone brought-up Dawkins as I was contemplating a thread start on him...

I too am guessing that his loyalties are more with Coach K than that of the Pac-10 conference.

Does Dawkins have the Cardinal playing a similar style game as we'll see today? If so, that would be good for our kids. Sure, the talent is different (better) with Duke, but just curious...

From today's CC Times:

Cal coach Mike Montgomery said in some ways Stanford, under former Blue Devils star/assistant coach Johnny Dawkins, plays closer to the style that Duke employs. "Minus the extraordinary talent that Duke has," Montgomery said. "You end up having to put (the ball) on the floor because they're not going to let you shoot an open shot. If you can't do that, you're going to end up having problems."

Sort of thought / hoped so... Good to hear. Thanks much.

This doesn’t include the remarkable history of Gonzaga, the very solid program at St. Mary’s, and the amazing but ultimately tragic run at Mount St. Mary’s...
Huh? Mount St. Mary's is women's school in L.A., with a main campus in Brentwood (near UCLA) and a satellite campus a few blocks north of USC. What tragic run? Perhaps they mean Loyola Marymount?

Oh no! Now Duke will know exactly what NOT TO DO AGAINST US!

Seriously, though, Dawkins or no, Boykin or no, I think both teams will have each other scoped out pretty well.

After saying we had less than a one in a thousand chance at the Final Four, I'm getting that irrational Bear optimism again.

For a while I thought it had to be illegal (it is for other sports) but apparently the Pac-10 only mandates that basketball coaches can't provide scouting reports of Pac-10 teams to nonconference opponents before the postseason. Anything during the postseason would have to otherwise conform to NCAA rules.

If Dawkins did do that, I would hope that the rest of the conference finds out about it an freezes him out.

Bak Bak - 03-21-2010, 10:41 AM

I wonder how many minutes Bak Bak would have gotten after his academic suspension?

I think he would have played the time we blew out Oregon. Monty was looking for someone to put in, and finally settled on Max even though Max had played earlier in the game. I think Monty would have put Bak Bak for the 4-5 minutes remaining.

But with the suspension of Omondi, would Bak Bak be our possible contingency plan if everyone else got in foul trouble?
