According to Mindy Bach....

That's one way to put Riley's a$$ on fire since he performs much better under the pressure.

Riley would have had 2 TD's today if our receivers could catch.

Now it's open !!!

Tedford hates Riley.

If he starts Nate.... look for Nate to stay in the game no matter how many TD's he throws for ASU.

This is unreal.

How would he have had 2 TDs? On the same drive that Young dropped the TD pass, Riley got a TD pass.

Nice to see that Tedford has two completely different sets of standards for what he considers unacceptable QB play. Which is not to say Riley has been playing well because he hasn't. But that he's willing to consider a change in Game 4 when he wouldn't consider one last year is rather illuminating as to what his biases are. Not that they weren't readily apparent last year.

What? Teford doesn't hate Kevin Riley. That is complete bs. The kid hasn't performed outside of the Michigan State game this year, and I guess to a certain extent the MD game (although it was too late). Maybe Kevin needs some competition to elevate his game. All I care is that the team progresses, it would be more desirable to have Kevin as the starter as he will be back next year, but maybe he needs some more development.

It's not possible for Tedford to have learned a lesson, Yogi? This is my point in another thread. Riley-supporters (as opposed to me, who doesn't care who is the QB as long as the best player plays) are willing to throw away a SECOND season to make things "even."

Sorry, I'm not willing to do that.

HERE'S A LINK

Quote:
Now for the potential quarterback shuffle. Tedford was asked whether he pulled Riley because the game was safely in hand at 28-0. Let’s just say he shot down that theory in a hurry.

“Nate played because Kevin was missing too many open receivers,” Tedford said.

Riley was 6 of 13 for 59 yards and one touchdown, a 17-yard strike to Nyan Boateng. Longshore was 9 of 13 for 100 yards and two touchdowns.

When asked about Riley’s job security, Tedford made it clear that nothing’s set in stone.

“We’re always evaluating that,” Tedford said. “We’ll see what happens. We’ll talk about it, see the tape and things like that.”

Tedford said that if “if a guy’s not playing well” at any position, “you have to look at making adjustments. I’m not saying that’s going to happen, but it’s always being evaluated.”

Tedford gave Longshore a good review, especially compared to the two thumbs down he gave Riley.

“Nate did fine,” Tedford said. “Nate, he wasn’t asked to do a lot because of the game situation. At that time we ran the ball quite a bit. But I thought he was pretty smart with the ball. He didn’t force the ball. He threw a couple nice balls. … For the most part, I thought Nate did fine. He ran the show and he ran the huddle.”

After the game, a despondent Riley took responsibility for missing those open receivers.

“Those are easy throws,” Riley said. “I’ve got to hit them. I just rushed it.”

Riley said he understood why Tedford yanked him from the game.

“I wasn’t performing,” Riley said. “Nate went in and did the job. I just need to play better, plain and simple. I need to hit open guys. … I was over-thinking a little too much.”

After Cal’s loss to Maryland, Tedford pinned some of the blame on his inexperienced wide receivers. Not this time.

“I didn’t see any issues today with inexperience at receiver or them running the wrong routes or the wrong depth or anything like that,” Tedford said.

If Tedford wanted to send a message to Riley, consider it sent. And if he wanted to lay the groundwork for a quarterback switch, consider it done.

Cal fans can only hope that if Tedford makes that switch, Longshore plays the same type of calm, cool, turnover-free football against ASU as he did coming off the bench with a 28-0 lead Saturday.

JT probably thought this board was getting too boring and in need of more arguments and flame wars, and thought he would fix that.

Riley need a kick in the @ss... - 09-27-2008, 08:49 PM

...or a seat on the bench.

His performances against Wazzou, CSU and Maryland when it mattered were nothing short of terrible. Throw in his poor first half and last-second choke against Oregon State last year, and the verdict on Riley is that he's an emotional QB who mails it in more often than he delivers.

Look, these were the complaints the objective Call football watchers, coaches, etc. were talking about. Riley isn't taking the job seriously, he doesn't do the day-to-day things you need to to to be a good, disciplined, successful QB. You can't mail it in for three quarters, show in the fourth when a game is already out of reach, and expect coaches not to notice. He deserves a lot of the blame for the Maryland debacle.

He sucked against Wazzou, he sucked against CSU, two of the worst teams in CFB. He sucked for three quarters against Marlyand. He had one good game against MSU, three awesome quarters against Air Force, and about two good quarters and a humliating choke agaisnt Oregon State.

Let's face facts. Right now, Riley is solidly among the bottom half of Pac 10 QBs. This isn't about JT hating Riley, it's about Riley needing to pull his head out of his @ss and showing up for four whole quarters every friggin game, not just the fourth quarters when he feels up for it.

We need a QB who plays snap-to-whistle. Right now, Riley isn't doing this, and he hasn't done it since he started playing. So I say BRING ON THE COMPETITION!

How many bad passes did Riley have? Young dropped a pass in the endzone, i think Cunningham dropped a pass a d-1 wr should catch, and he threw one away after getting pressure right from the snap. That means 4 bad passes including one awful miss intended for Morrah.

This is a position that no one else has raised in a post except you. It appears that you are the sole author of both the argument and the counter argument.

Competition is a good thing.
Kevin Riley has one good (not that great, but pretty good) game against MSU, but has not done anything since.

Bullsh-t. So many people have made that argument, if not in so many words.

YogiBear, a respected poster, earlier said:

The underlying point being, "Let me whine...Naaaaate ruined laaaaast season so Kevin should get the chance to ruin thiiiiiiis season!"

And there have been maaaaaaaaany others making this argument: that because Tedford didn't go to Kevin last year, he shouldn't go to Nate this year. I'm sorry, but I'm not willing to ruin a second season. I have no idea if Nate or Kevin should start. I just know Kevin needs to step it up, because he has been terrible. By his own admission:
