I've wanted to read Mitchell for a while, and bought Cloud Atlas. Wonderful book; a series of 6 related stories, first half of each told chronologically, second halves in reverse order; time periods range from 19th century to the future.

Each story has its own style, voice and atmosphere; the recurrent themes are violence and predation, and its ideas work on many levels. Often funny, always deeply thoughtful. Highly recommended.
