The third time was a charm for Oaks Christian defensive end Trevor Howard, as the 6-3/225 Trevor Howard made his commitment to Cal on his third visit to check out the Bears today for Cal's seventh fall camp practice.
"I just really like what I've seen from Cal," said Howard. "The coaches are great, the education's great. It's just a great place for me to be."
Continuing with their theme of pursuing athletic, big-framed defensive ends, the Bears offered Howard earlier this summer after having the chance to see him perform in person, not to mention noting his success against high level talent at the LA NFTC in May.
Howard plays in a similar defense for Oaks now so the transition should be a smooth one for the incoming senior.
"Cal's defense is really similar to ours and I feel like I'm well-suited to play D-end there," said Howard. "We run a lot of the same plays so there wouldn't be a lot for me to learn.
"I really like Coach Tate. He'll tell you things like it is but then pick you up if he has to get on you. I like that.
"Coach Kaufman's a great coach, too. He's doing good things with the defense."
This was Howard's first opportunity to see the Bears at full speed and he liked what he saw in Memorial today.
"The defense played fast and were really aggressive," said Howard. "Almost too aggressive at times. It looks like they're really coming along well."
Howard noted that the Bears plan to play him as a hybrid defensive end outside linebacker to take advantage of his size and athleticism.
"I think that would be great," said Howard. "I'll play wherever they need me to play.
"I'm just really excited to be a Bear."
