A warm April afternoon
(This is part two of a series on Pac-12 quarterbacks.  As was the case in part one, this will briefly cover each team's quarterback situation, answer a couple of questions about how last year's quarterback did against the Bears and if there's anything worth noting from last year that might possibly be of interest for this year.  In this story, Stanford through Washington State are covered.  Part three will feature Jared Goff.)

STANFORD – KEVIN HOGAN

Does Cal have to worry about him this year?

Yes – he's back again. Hogan was a backup during Stanford's 21-3 Big Game win in 2012, but since then he's been behind center for Stanford's 63-13 and 38-17 victories the past two years.

Did he have his best game of the season against the Bears?

No, but he had a darned good one, throwing for 214 yards on 15-of-20 passing and running seven times for 46 yards. With the game being one-sided, there wasn't much of a need for him to throw or for Stanford to deviate from its grind-it-out offense.

Are there anything from his numbers that jump out?

Hogan's numbers did fall quite a bit during road games – his touchdown to interception numbers were 14 to 3 for home games, but 3 to 5 during road games in about the same number of attempts. The other thing is that he tends to struggle if teams can put a rush on him. During wins, he averaged 30 yards a game running and 4.4 yards peer carry. But in losses, he averaged 11 yards a game and 1.4 yards per carry.

UCLA – BRETT HUNDLEY

Does Cal have to worry about him this year?

Thankfully, no. Quarterbacks who could run always gave the Bears fits, with Hundley being near the top of the list. Hundley's playing well in preseason with the Green Bay Packers. It looks like UCLA's going to take its chances with true freshman Josh Rosen. UCLA's bringing back enough talent on offense that they won't need Rosen to be much more than a capable game manager – execute the offense and avoid making turnovers. It's unlikely that he'll match Hundley's production right away – particularly as a running threat; which will make life a tick simpler for Cal when they visit the Bruins on October 22nd.

Did he have his best game of the season against the Bears?

Such was Hundley's season that his 31-for-42, 330-yard, two-touchdown, 94-rushing-yard game in UCLA's 36-34 win over the Bears was the seventh-best game of the season in terms of QB rating.

Are there anything from his numbers that jump out?

Hundley was one of the rare quarterbacks who actually played better against stronger teams. In games against top 25 opponents, his quarterback rating was 160.4, due to a higher yardage-per-attempt, and a higher touchdown percentage; compared to 146.9 against everybody else.

USC – CODY KESSLER

Does Cal have to worry about him this year?

Maybe more than any other quarterback they'll face this season. USC's had the Bears' number for quite some time. The thought was that the scholarship reductions that the Trojans faced after running afoul of the NCAA might have made them vulnerable, and maybe they were but certainly not against Cal. But after years of losing by 27, 34, 21, 18, and 34 points, the Bears managed to close the gap to eight last season, which is room for hope.

Did he have his best game of the season against the Bears?

For most quarterbacks, completing 74% of their passes throwing for 371 yards and four touchdowns would be a season highlight, but for Kessler, his game against Cal (174.7 QB rating) was slightly above average (167.1 QB rating for the season.)

Are there anything from his numbers that jump out?

In home games, he threw 23 touchdowns and just one interception. In wins, he threw for 32 touchdowns and just three interceptions. But against Top 25 opposition, he stumbled. Out of 133 pass attempts, he threw for three touchdowns and two interceptions, and his QB rating was just 127.3.

UTAH – TRAVIS WILSON

Does Cal have to worry about him this year?

Yes – while Wilson doesn't post impressive numbers, his gritty play made him one of the more entertaining quarterbacks to watch in the Pac-12. The Utes won five games by six points or less; including wins against USC and Stanford where Wilson stood tall with an array of fourth quarter heroics. During the past two seasons, he's overcome a head injury and also briefly lost the starting job.

Did he have his best game of the season against the Bears?

Utah didn't play Cal last year, but they do host them on October 10th. Wilson will be a threat with his running, but he isn't a big runner in the way that Hundley was, so much as he's an opportunistic runner. While he did gain 309 yards running last year, 91 were in the last game against Colorado State.

Are there anything from his numbers that jump out?

Wilson had five games where his QB rating was under 100, which is just about unheard of for a bowl team. His numbers were bolstered wins against Idaho State and Fresno State, where he had QB ratings over 200.

WASHINGTON – CYLER MILES

Does Cal have to worry about him this year?

No, and neither will Washington. Miles is taking the year off to resolve personal issues – which left the quarterback position open throughout the spring and fall. While no starting quarterback has been announced for the opener against Boise State, it's down to Jeff Lindquist and true freshman/Folsom native Jake Browning. Washington coach Chris Petersen has never started a true freshman quarterback, and it's certainly within the realm of possibility that both quarterbacks could play.

Did he have his best game of the season against the Bears?

Just about – he threw for a season highs of 273 yards and three touchdowns. His QB rating of 189.1 narrowly trailed his game against Oregon State (199.4) and Colorado (194.2).

Are there anything from his numbers that jump out?

Although his season QB rating of 142.4 was respectable and he was consistent throughout the season – 141.8 in the first half and 142.9 in the second half, he struggled against better teams. Versus top 25 opposition, his QB rating was just 104.0 as he averaged less than five yards per attempts and out of 81 attempts, threw two touchdowns and two interceptions.

WASHINGTON STATE - CONNOR HALLIDAY

Does Cal have to worry about him this year?

When October 3rd comes, hopefully he and Sonny Cumbie will be far, far away from Berkeley. Halliday missed the end of last season with an injury giving Luke Falk the chance to get some playing time. Falk's no slouch himself, throwing for 601 yards against Arizona State last fall.

Did he have his best game of the season against the Bears?

734 yards. What do you think? In addition to setting an NCAA FBS record for passing yards in a game, he completed 49-of-70 passes and threw for six touchdowns. In addition, this was the only game of the season where he had positive rushing yards.

Are there anything from his numbers that jump out?

Halliday finished last season with 3,873 yards, despite missing all of three and most of a fourth game. Had he stayed healthy, he could have taken a run at B.J. Symons single-season record of 5,833 yards. Symons set the record in 2003 while playing for Texas Tech under current Washington State head coach Mike Leach.
