BERKELEY – Davis Webb and James Looney were named the 2016 Cal Football Bear Backers Offensive and Defensive MVPs to highlight a series of awards announced at the team's annual awards banquet held Sunday at the Pauley Ballroom on the University of California campus.
Looney and Webb were also two of the team's five Cort Majors Team Captains along with Darius Allensworth, Raymond Davison and Steven Moore.
Webb ranks in the top seven nationally in seven categories including passing attempts (620, No. 1), passing yards (4295, No. 2), completions (382, No. 3), total offense (348.8, No. 5), points responsible for per game (21.7, No. 5), passing touchdowns (37, No. T5) and points responsible for (260, No. 7). He is also the Pac-12's leader in passing attempts, passing yards and total offense. In addition, Webb set Cal single-season records for passing attempts, completions and total plays (653) while equaling three other single-season school records including touchdowns responsible for (43) with his 37 in the air plus another six on the ground that tied for the most ever by a Cal quarterback as well as 10 300-yard passing games. Webb also set a single-game school record with his 72 pass attempts at San Diego State.
Looney started all 12 regular-season games and compiled 54 tackles, 8.0 sacks (-38 yards), 3.5 tackles for loss (-22 yards), two quarterback hurries, one fumble recovery that he returned 25 yards and one forced fumble. He had a career-high nine tackles against Texas, a career-high 2.0 tackles for loss (career-high -17 yards) against Oregon and a career-high-tying 1.0 sack three times including a career-high -10 sack yards twice against Oregon and UCLA.
Looney took home a team-high three awards while Webb and Moore picking up two each. Looney added his third as the team's most valuable lineman (Brick Muller Award) while Moore had the most Big "C" Time (Andy Smith Award). A total of 18 student-athletes were honored with at least one of the team's 22 honors with the full list below followed by biographical information on each of the honorees.
