A look at Cal's slow starts in conference play, how Justin Cobbs and Richard Solomon have done in games played at UCLA and USC, and home/road, win/loss and last four breakdowns through the Washington State game.
What makes the Bears' 5-0 conference start interesting is that they've done so despite getting off to slow starts in four of them. It's a testament to their depth and resiliency that they've been able to come back each time, especially twice on the road at Oregon and Stanford.

In two of the games, the Bears were able to turn things around once they replaced Jordan Mathews - against Stanford, Cal reduced an eight-point deficit to one once they replaced Mathews with Singer, and against Washington, they reversed a four-point deficit to a one point lead after replacing Mathews with Powers.

Against Oregon State, the Bears trailed by five, 18-13, at the 12:33 mark, when they made their first set of substitutions, replacing Mathews and Richard Solomon with Singer and Christian Behrens. They weren't able to cut into the lead right after that, and in the ensuing minutes, the deficit increased.

And then against Washington State, the opening lineup found the Bears trailing 9-8 a the 14:44 mark, but after various substitutions, Cal found themselves trailing by eight, 18-10 a short time later.

Although an argument could be made that the Bears should try something different to get off to a better start, it has to be noted that of their five conference wins, the most impressive from an RPI standpoint was their victory over Oregon.  Cal started off well in this game, due primarily to the efforts of Mathews who had a career-high 32 points.

While the Oregon game has been an outlier for Mathews in conference play, it's not as if he's shooting the teams out of games.  And he is one of the few players on the team who can put up a dozen points on the board in a hurry if he gets account - and there is value in having somebody out on the floor that defenses know they have to keep an eye on.

However, there are four other players on the court and they all just as much to do with the team's slow start - just because they stay in the game and are able to gradually untracked doesn't mean that they're off the hook.

Cal is using personnel differently this year - subbing their bigs earlier in the first half and not waiting for Solomon or Kravish to get into foul trouble which has left them hanging on with reserve towards the end of the first 20 minutes.  They also have considerably more depth this year which allows the coaching staff to work through more playing combinations early in search of better matchups. This leaves the team in better shape to finish off games.

And regardless of how they've started, they've finished off all of their games extremely well.

But with Jabari Bird working his way back from injury and gradually getting increased playing time, the coaching staff will have to make a decision about whether they'd want to bring Mathews off the bench to give the team added bench scoring punch - or if they like the overall balance the current lineup brings, where they have Mathews/Powers functioning as a two-headed, 35-minute a game scoring monster.

This will be Cobbs' and Solomon's final opportunity to play for the Bears in the Los Angeles area in front of friends and family.  Over the years, Cal's always had a few players from L.A. area schools, so the trip down south has special meaning to them.  There's always a question about whether playing in front of lots of familiar faces has an inspirational effect or makes them nervous.

One can't really draw an conclusions for either player based off of these charts, but
