BERKELEY -The Bears took the field for the second time this spring session to a bright sunny sky and warm temps. Much as Wednesday's first day, the practice largely centered around technique and fundamentals as the new staff gets acclimated to the players.

"We just have to learn some of the finer points in transition from drill to drill," said offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin.

"The great thing is, they're sponges. I've said that a lot. You could see that as soon as I got there, day one.

"I'm excited to see some of the things we improve on Monday and I was also excited to see the progress we made from Wednesday to Friday."

One of the interesting elements of the composition of Cal's staff is the fact that they have essentially three head coaches, with offensive and defensive coordinators Baldwin and Tim DeRuyter having spent significant time in the trenches as head coaches themselves before coming aboard with the new Cal staff under head coach Justin Wilcox.

"Coach Wilcox has such a zero ego mentality that he's always looking to find ways to be better," said Baldwin.

"It doesn't matter if it's from a former head coach like Coach DeRuyter or me or anyone else on staff -even a coach that visits," said Baldwin. "He's going to pay attention and take notes. That's why he's the kind of coach that will continue to get better. He never feels like he's a finished product.

"I notice it all the time. I'm just enjoying the other side of it, too, just learning from so many guys on the staff and being a part of this culture."

Today's practice saw a lot of familiar faces, with former Cal QB Davis Webb and former NFL QB Jim Zorn as well as former receivers Chad Hansen and Patrick Worstell as well as former running back Khalfani Muhamad, who noted that he intends to run in the 4.3's at Cal's Pro Day next Friday.
