In a critical recruiting year for the future of Cal basketball, the Bears received welcome word that 6-5/190 New Trier (Winnetka, IL) High School SF/SG Alex Rossi will be headed to Berkeley next season.

The journey to Cal was a long one for Rossi, who was recruited as far back as his freshman year as a green frosh addition to the New Trier varsity by former Cal Head Coach Ben Braun, also a New Trier alum.

Upon Braun's departure from Cal following the 2007-08 season, Cal assistant Coach Greg Gottlieb continued the pursuit of Rossi, who was rapidly blossoming into a legitimate high-major prospect.

"They've stuck with me through thick and thin, recruiting me since the beginning of high school," said Rossi.  "They've had five coaches out to watch me and I've always had the knowledge that they all liked me so I always knew where I stood with Cal and have always felt really comfortable with them.

"When I visited with (Cal Head) Coach (Mike) Montgomery, we sat down and watched film. and he broke down for me how I fit into their plans.  Everything he said about how they'd like to use me is exactly what I'd like to do at the next level, so it was great.

"They do a lot of screens and plays where you move without the ball and shooting's definitely the strength of my game."

One of the area's that Rossi, who chose Cal over Iowa, Notre Dame, Northwester, Butler and Davidson, is looking to improve is his defense and he'd comfortable that he's making strides there as well.

"I competed in the Top 100 tournament last week and I really wanted to prove to myself that I could guard these top players, " said Rossi.  "I think in years past, I've been okay but I feel like my d's really picked up this spring and this summer on the defensive end.

"Shooting's definitely my strength, though.  It felt like I didn't miss a shot this spring. Before AAU ball (with Rising Stars squad), I felt like I was kind of an ordinary player (averaging 15 points and 7 rebounds as a junior), but now I feel like it's all coming together for me.

"I can't wait to get to Cal."
