This shows a commitment to sustaining athletics with campus money. Now let's see a commitment to winning.

IMO this makes it easier for the chancellor (not that she technically needed more clout) to make changes in the future, including the already-proposed idea of bringing the department into compliance with prong 1 of the Title IX test, which at Cal would require that the total number of athletes on women's varsity teams be about 52 percent of the total number of varsity athletes at Cal.

Profitable? Only if you count a Christ bailout as revenue.

How misleading!

I see this as a bad sign in fact. Christ signed a huge check with a promise of smaller and smaller checks to come.

This is Knowlton's put up or shut up moment. He better come through because not only will he be fired but there will be some other severe fallout.

This is like that last check your dad gives you that comes with all sorts of conditions before the checks stop coming entirely.

Wrong.
On all levels. Knowlton and Christ are on the same page. He's not getting fired by this chancellor, who is finally supporting athletics on campus like other schools in the conference. No athletic departments in the Pac-12 are "profitable". All schools subsidize athletics. Cal does have more sports, but nobody is even breaking even. It's the cost of doing business.

"put up or shut up moment"? Please.
