Down 2, 2 min left, inside the 30. Let's see how they manage the same situation.

Aggressive and threw twice. Got a PI and now inside the 10

I just posted this on another thread.

Oregon throws twice on the 25 yard line. And they're about to ice the game.

I honestly think Wilcox is the only P4 coach who wokld play it the way he did

We settle for a long field goal with a 50% kicker . I would kick now.

Can someone explain how a middling state school in Eugene can maintain 20+ years of elite football? Is it just Phil Knight?

And low academic standards.

No, OSU went downfield easily and will line up to try and win it.

Hope Wilcox is watching this. This is how big time programs play football. You play with no fear.

I think some B1G teams are going to start re-thinking all these west coast trips.

Mostly, yes.

But it's also that with Phil's influence a winning culture was created and now it's expected and self-perpetuating. Cal has always self-sabotaged whenever it looked like one might be growing here.

If we had Phil knight, Wilcox would've been gone years ago. That's the difference

The only good strategy Wilcox had demonstrated in his tenure here was getting an extension through the rumor that Oregon wanted him

TOSU QB is a Duke transfer for those who want to discuss the lack of academic standards further. Candidly, Cal played an incredibly stupid, and mistake laden game today, with its scholar athletes, so the whole academics thing sounds like a lame BS excuse.

I think the scuttlebutt is that they did offer to Wilcox (as an alum who would please the older donors) but were going to place restrictions on him around hiring the offensive staff. He probably wasn't really going to take that offer.

Which makes perfect sense if there was an offer at all. And of course, Cal's contract probably has nonsuch clause, and as a result, here we are.

if by Phil Knight you mean Nike. Phil Knight might be worth more than the SEC and B1Gs top 10 boosters combined which is huge (he's probably spent $1.5B on Oregon Athletics, maybe more) but that still only gets you so far. it's the 30 years of aiming the marketing cannon of the most popular athletic brand in the world straight at Eugene to the point that the Oregon brand is synonymous with the Nike brand. No one else can buy that at any price.

still can't win a title though.

Does anyone know what happens when Phil eventually passes. Is there some sort of endowment setup up that insures Oregon is funded till eternity?

Do you think Nike will still promote Oregon with the same ferocity once he's gone?

Funny enough KSU is playing exactly the way I think JW would want to play. But we've also already hired a national champion FCS offensive mind before and clearly it didn't work either.

The more and more I think about it, the more I think it's just that our OL is consistently under talented and under coached, year in and year out, with the exception of last year.

Yup. Though I think that Nike is under some pretty intense market pressure.

In a lot of ways they are the biggest of big fish in Eugene with Nike personnel embedded in the cultural/political ecosystem and a pipeline from UofO.

A data geek with more time on their hands would go through and identify how many 4* linemen came out of California in the last decade and, of those, how many Cal (and then other former Pac12 teams) got. I am guessing few. It gets at that CA HS football under a LOT of pressure and that we don't have a good pipeline of Great local talent that want to stay local.

Then look at linemen U in Wisconsin. I bet they get nearly every 4* from the great upper midwest (Wis, Minn, Illinois, arguablly Iowa and the dakotas. (remember, while these states are BIG their urban centers are relatively proximate to Madison making it akin to being from Fresno (Chicago/Madison is actually closer).

OSU fans are wondering why Chip called a pick play at the 30 yard, which resulted in a 10 yard OPI bringing them back to the 40, instead of running to set up a game winning field goal.

Again shows the difference between a top program and whatever the f ours is. Oregon's AD knew the biggest flaw for Wilcox is his lack of experience with offense. They prepared for it by restricting him in that area. And so he "turned it down".

Then you have our administration, who despite already having ample enough evidence Wilcox is not it, decided to give him an insane extension with one of the worst buyouts ever and placed no restrictions whatsoever that would've benefited Cal. All because Wilcox is "a great man." And look how that turned out… the one year we had a good offense, Wilcox runs off the OC to Baylor.

I think many are overestimating the direct influence and benefit of Nike on the Oregon program. It is Phil Knight's wealth via Nike that has allowed Oregon to improve their athletics program and put Oregon football in a position to compete at a higher level. Phil's money, along with several other donors, have allowed Oregon to build world class facilities and now spend heavily on NIL. Flashy football uniforms only go so far in helping a program improve. That is where Nike helped Oregon, but uniforms alone do not attract talent to a university.

Speculation from the poster above but I do recall supposed Oregon sources saying that was why he turned it down. Who knows if they were true or not but the speculation is out there https://www.si.com/college/cal/news/espn-report-wilcox-turns-down-oregon#:~:text=Sources%20close%20to%20Wilcox%20said,the%20program%20like%20he%20wanted.
