Imagine what this Cal team would have done at Talahassee last year, they would have won by 3-4 TDs, and would have kept scoring against Miami, we would have closed the deal before the 4th quarter. This year's team would have been 9-3 or 10-2 last year.
Just upgrade the kicking game and we have 10 wins last year
What could have been if we had just given Bhaghani the scholarship that he earned.
Whose decision was that?
Who do you think
That is my point about Wilcox. I don't say he is a bad head coach just because of the results (losing twice as many conference games as he wins, 5 losing seasons in row) but because he makes bad decisions, is poor at building a staff, repeatedly giving jobs to his friends from the Pacific Northwest instead of strategically building a staff that would recruit top players to Cal as we always did in the past (even under bad coaches like Gilby and Holmoe). There were a host of bad decisions on Wilcox's part last year that squandered a great opportunity when we can no longer afford to squander our opportunities.
Hopefully not again this year.
I agree almost entirely with your post but I will say the recruiting part is wrong. Teams used to be able to key in on underrecruited guys in their geographic area but in the social media & internet era (escalating recently) every team has to be national other than lower tier teams that take sleepers in their backyard. We've gone national to Georgia, Texas, Hawaii, Minnesota, Florida, etc. recently for top recruits and that's how it has to be.
Top recruits from California aren't just going to top CA schools anymore, they're going anywhere. You don't get guys who have limited exposure that you can key in on and build a program around that programs like Wisconsin and OkSt used to feast on. For us that means that there aren't a slew of NorCal recruits that have potential, are academically qualified, and/or that other teams across the country don't know about. Everyone has been forced to expand their territory, it can't be within 100 miles of campus anymore
