Imagine what this Cal team would have done at Talahassee last year, they would have won by 3-4 TDs, and would have kept scoring against Miami, we would have closed the deal before the 4th quarter. This year's team would have been 9-3 or 10-2 last year.

Just upgrade the kicking game and we have 10 wins last year

What could have been if we had just given Bhaghani the scholarship that he earned.

Whose decision was that?

That is my point about Wilcox. I don't say he is a bad head coach just because of the results (losing twice as many conference games as he wins, 5 losing seasons in row) but because he makes bad decisions, is poor at building a staff, repeatedly giving jobs to his friends from the Pacific Northwest instead of strategically building a staff that would recruit top players to Cal as we always did in the past (even under bad coaches like Gilby and Holmoe). There were a host of bad decisions on Wilcox's part last year that squandered a great opportunity when we can no longer afford to squander our opportunities.

Hopefully not again this year.

I think our only shot at game day would be if we win the acc championship and host a playoff game. But if the narrative around cal keeps growing, that smu game (if they're undefeated) would have a lot more interest than people might think. It's new and different. Ohio State Michigan is old and done.

"Old and done" based on what metric? Last year's game was the 2nd most watched game of the 2024 season, and had the highest Ohio St/Michigan ratings since 2020....
Cal and SMU remain undefeated (how many times have we talked about that after 3 games) Ohio St. loses to Penn St, and maybe one other, Michigan gets a loss or two, then maybe ESPN let's Fox handle that one solo, and goes for the "new and different."

If we and SMU were both undefeated, we would have had a great shot. But as it currently stands, even if SMU can run the table in conference play (taking down Miami in the process), there are just too many other high profile rivalry games that week. Texas and A&M, OSU and Michigan, heck even Georgia and GT if they can keep it going. And frankly, we don't have any other home games against a high quality opponent worthy of CGD. They're not going to come out here for the likes of Duke, UNC, or UVA.

SMU down 21-10 in the 3rd Qtr to Sonny Dykes and TCU. Barring a nice comeback I doubt even then Cal -SMU is going to be in the mix.

SMU came back, took the lead, TCU answered, up now 28-24 with 7min left.

TCU scored again, up 11 late in the game, winning. SMU QB Jennings not 100%, and their passing D looks vulnerable.

I agree almost entirely with your post but I will say the recruiting part is wrong. Teams used to be able to key in on underrecruited guys in their geographic area but in the social media & internet era (escalating recently) every team has to be national other than lower tier teams that take sleepers in their backyard. We've gone national to Georgia, Texas, Hawaii, Minnesota, Florida, etc. recently for top recruits and that's how it has to be.

Top recruits from California aren't just going to top CA schools anymore, they're going anywhere. You don't get guys who have limited exposure that you can key in on and build a program around that programs like Wisconsin and OkSt used to feast on. For us that means that there aren't a slew of NorCal recruits that have potential, are academically qualified, and/or that other teams across the country don't know about. Everyone has been forced to expand their territory, it can't be within 100 miles of campus anymore

Pat is pretty high on JKS.

Note the hype from ACC media.
