Nick Saban said it best, good talent cannot overcome bad coaching, staff always matters the most

Tedford proved that twice, with the instant turnarounds at Cal and Fresno State.

Wilcox proved that with the defense. But... Now this.

Wilcox did the opposite with offense though. Took the #1 offense in Pac-12 to #12. Net result was no improvement. Then as he lost the players he inherited, and drove off DeRuyter in favor of his buddy Sirmon, the defense went for elite to just OK.

Another bad snap and frosh mistake but the former influenced the latter

JKS has showed freshman mistakes a lot all season. His skill has overcome a lot, so some don't see it, but Cal is gifting him the snaps he needs to be a Heisman player wherever he goes. Even with them, he's so good.

5-4. Hard to see how we beat anyone else except maybe Furd. What a sad season, coming on the heels of a sad season, after a sad season, following up on a sad season . . . .

Yeah. I don't see any chance of him returning unless we hire some offensive wonder.

The offense decline was no where near the defense improvement.

Dykes literally had NCAA record all-time worst defensive stats. Not 12th in the Pac. Not last place this year. Worst ever passing defense type stats.

This isn't a dykes vs Wilcox post, it's a Wilcox turned around a worst-ever to one of the best. Coaching matters.

He could be a great DC. Not a great HC.

I can't believe Justin Wilcox still has a job. And every day that he still does makes me think Rivera has no clue either.

Oh get rid of that crap, the idiots last year who thought Mendoza was not the real deal when he was our next Goff/Rodgers are now going to shift to the JKS isn't for real pathology huh

I suppose. Money has to be there too. At least 10 teams will try and lure JKS away with some pretty hefty coin.

all i saw is that

defense: on that last virginia drive 3rd and long we know its a passing down we cant get to the qb

and when we know its a running down we cant get a stop on the run

lines are weak

offense: we cant snap the ball.

we cant score unless its a short field or a trick play

the entire offense is weak

most importantly wilcox is weak

JKS is a mediocre QB. Phenomenal true freshman QB.

Any other era and I would be super excited for "next year"

What's wild about this era is "next year" doesn't exist anymore. There is no program building. Only program buying. Cal is a stepping stone program for players who need snaps.

No matter how much he loves Cal, it would be such a huge mistake to return. We don't offer him anything he can't get elsewhere, along with better development, full stadiums, more surrounding talent, and the chance to play meaningful games.

I can't imagine a scenario, new coaches or not, where JKS returns to Cal to be part of what at best will be a rebuilding situation. He'll have opportunities like Mendoza did to go where he'll be surrounded by higher level skill players, a good offensive line, and good coaching.

BS, Indiana built a program in less than 6 months and Cignetti was not an expensive get coming out of James Madison, a decent coach will be $6 million+ or we go cheap with DeSean, but it can happen quickly with the right hire

That was 5 years ago, since then deRuyter got fired from Texas Tech last year after his D was ranked 125th out of 133 FBS programs. He's currently not working.

I think it's more that Cal isn't going to see the snaps this season pay off over then next 2 or 3 years.

He could be a great DC. Not a great HC.

That was Dykes' first year with Buh and mostly players inherited from the decline of Tedford. Our defense was really bad in 2012 and we lost our starting DBs to the NFL. Then with injuries they literally ran out of scholarship DBs in 2013 against a great passing PAC-12.

Wilcox's great 2018 defense was guys Kaufman and his position coaches recruited and DeRuyter schemed up. Not Wilcox, but if we want to sell the codes of Wilcox as a great DC so another school will hire him and mitigate our costs, I am on board.

A brutal realization is forming that the great defenses of the early Wilcox tenure were made possible by the recruits coming in at the end of the Dykes era, not necessarily the coaching

Indiana hired a G5 coach for ****'s sake, what they did was remarkable but not exactly earth-shattering

Hard to develop the "it" factor flat on your back watching your WR drop another catchable ball.

Those QBs had playmakers available and/or hotshot coordinators, Harsin is doing what we can but also consider the Wilcox offensive philosophy
bearister
How long do you want to ignore this user?
To be fair to him you have to factor in the total number of catchable passes dropped and the total yardage that cratered with them. We probably lead the nation in those stats and they each have big numbers attached.

Nothing about this is JKS's fault. Anyone who really watches the games can tell. He's the only thing propping our offense up to mediocre.
