It didn't work out for Jaydn Ott, he could have left after the 2023 season and been selected somewhere in the first four rounds. I have a bad feeling we are going to implode before the end of the season......

Unfortunately, the players don't matter if you don't have the coaching.

Have to disagree with you on that one. No JKS and we don't even have 5 wins. And it didn't help that Uluave didn't play yesterday. (Still, Wilcox has to go.)

I predict: next year we either have Wilcox or JKS. No way we can keep both. But if we change coaches JKS may decide to stick around.

JKS leaving is almost a certainty, because the reasons for leaving is overwhelming vs. reasons to stay. To wit, OL can't protect him, Center can't reliably get the ball to him, mediocre receiver talent with propensity to drop well-thrown passes, "supported" by one of the worst running games in the P4. To top it off, QB play hasn't improved through 9 games, suggesting ineffective development by the Wilcox staff. The icing on the cake is next season promises to be either more of the same (Wilcox not fired), or lots of unknowns with a new coaching staff. As a Cal fan, I'd love to see KJS disregard all the above reasons and stick around, but if I were his parents, family, or sports agent, I'd tell him to look for a better P4 club with more money, better staff, and deeper talent pools.

JKS leaving would be catastrophic for the Cal program. Losing Mendoza then JKS would cement the perception that Cal is finished as a P4 program.

I would have to agree, really sad to see a school that produced so many NFL talents is one step away from playing in the Big Sky Conference......

Hire DeSean and keep Rolovich then JKS stays and this turns around in a nanosecond

I think we are in the ACC for the foreseeable future. I think we would have to pay a heavy exit fee to the ACC in order to leave the conference.

Not willing to sell, our soul to keep jks . We need to hire the best coach who can recruit and coach.

Agree, but "...the best coach who can recruit, hire excellent staff, and coach." I think one of Wilcox's most significant failings is his inability to make good assistant coach hires.

What perception? It's already reality. Cal's a dead man walking and the only ones who don't recognize it are deluded Cal fans and the Wilsux enablers in the administration. Wilsux killed the program (sure he had help from Knownothin and the LA schools' defection to the B1G without Cal) but at the end of the day, his lackluster direction caused Cal football to crash and burn.

In the modern college sports environment, I cannot think of a single viable reason why Sagapolutele would stay and several why he will go (better, more high profile team, better WR's, better coaching, he gets better stats, more publicity and goes higher in the Draft).
I say Cal should embrace its role as a steppingstone program where freshman players with potential can get lots of reps before their Portal journey up the food chain.

I don't fully agree. What it would do is cement our position as the school where very good players start but don't finish in P4. The place where QBs come because they can start now instead of riding a bench for 2 years at Oregon.

I read an article on a Hoosier fan site in which Mendoza said he decided to switch schools after seeing how much progress his freshman brother had made in reading defenses and in other fundamentals after just one year at Indiana. Said his brother now knew more than he did about playing the position. We will have to show JKS that our future coach and assistants will be able to provide that same level of coaching.

It would depend who's hired.
It would depend on what other schools will offer.

Agree. There is no potential for him to stay as you mention. He has also made some high school throws and reads this season which can't be overcome by our struggling offense. To be a more effective passer he needs to have a running game as well, which we don't currently have. I'd be surprised if he doesn't leave. Great kid and prospect.

I agree in the current environment (Transfer Portal, NIT) . Our best hope to keep being the stepping stone school and have a season where luck and talent combine to get us into 8+ win territory. We can build off that.

JKS will likely return if he is convinced that we will have significantly better offensive talent to surround him and if he makes a positive connection with the next HC, OC/QB coach.

The problem is that there won't be much time for that in the short portal window which comes up all too soon.

Agreed. My hope is that he would at least wait until the Spring to decide.

There is just one transfer portal window now. It runs Jan 2 through Jan 16. If he is to transfer it will be in that window. The Spring window was eliminated earlier this season. The exception for players where there has been a coaching change has also changed. It is now just 15 days and does not start until 5 days AFTER the next coach has been named or hired.

Cal if they fire Wilcox will do so well before the January transfer window. And likely name their HC well before then as well. Grad transfers can still enter at any time. But JKS is a long way from being a grad transfer.

I think Cal is working with him and his family now on plans to improve the program and get him more compensation (Legit NIL deals). Not sure they will be successful, but many folks do believe he likes it here and will give Cal every opportunity to make good on their plans.

Yes, I remember that now, but this year only, IMO. The NCAA is not going to be able to stop players from transferring in Spring even if they do not provide a Portal. Players will transfer after Spring, if the NCAA tries to stop them it will be challenged in court, and the NCAA will lose (again). Unfortunately that may be too late for us as Sagapolutele will think he has to decide by the January window and it will be a race for us to get WRs and other talent on board to convince him to stay.

If there is no Portal in Spring it will just be a free for all, with players not even needing to inform their programs they are leaving. The only transfer restriction the NCAA can reasonably enforce is once players have enrolled for Fall classes and the season has begun.

Bad optics though … next QB better be serviceable to good (can make the throws) losing two QB's back to back that end up in the league/ productive elsewhere is not what we want on our resume for realignment

Very interesting. This is the reason I will always believe good, smart, hard-nose coaches, including the head coach, are more important than good recruiters. (Obviously it's great if you are both) Cal will always get smart kids who appreciate this. Exhibit A, Tedford and Snyder and the staffs they built. Geez, one of the exceptions was Tosh, the recruiter. F'ed this up.

The only thing that will change that perception is hiring a good coach.

You can't build your team around a player, you need to build around the coach. Players will leave but the coach will bring in new players as part of their rebuild.

Yes it is possible to leave over summer. Withdraw from school and enroll elsewhere. That has been done already by Miami DB Xavier Lucas that withdrew from Wisconsin and enrolled at Miami and is playing this season for the Hurricanes. Though he did ask to put into the portal and Wisconsin did not oblige. It was ultimately settled.

There will be teams that have injuries etc during Spring and will be searching for players. And players keeping an eye open for possible new landing spots once they see their fate determined after Spring practice.

Cal needs to do what they can do to have the best possible roster for next season and provide the best package for JKS. If he leaves he leaves.

The current situation regarding the transfer portal etc is a major ****show and somehow it needs to get fixed. But Cal does not control that. They have some control over what they offer JKS and likely will be willing to pay to get some offensive help for JKS. He then has to decide.
