Sometimes the NCAA gets it right. I love the transfer-without-penalty rule for graduates. I hope CDJ finds a good fit.

Wasn't the Clay rumor that he would be back in the summer if he got his academics in order?

Listening to Tedford's post practice interview it does not sound like Clay will be back:

Yes, his grades are that good, that grad school in the Ivies is a possible. Good kid, behind some studs. Look out for Lasco.

A few days ago when the Clay rumor about possibly returning to Cal surfaced I had
hopeful anticipation that it would happen and we would get some much, much needed speed at WR. Felt good for a few days.

CDJ didn't get a break. 10 carries for the season; his running style needs 10 carries per half. Yes, a waste of talent.

Hope he does well at his next stop. I guess an argument could be made that he could have gotten some of Mike Manuel's carries last year, but that wouldn't have added a lot. I couldn't see any reason why he would have gotten carries from either Isi or CJA. Tough luck for him, but that is the reality of competition at the BCS D1 level.

Ever wonder if it's more like JT doesn't want him back? We really don't know all there is in this situation. Even if he could get back into Cal would he be given a schollie or would he be a walkon? Lots of questions but no answers.

I think the coach is being honest with CDJ. The kit is graduating with his Cal degree and given the level of talent in the backfield, he isn't due to get many reps this season. If CDJ wants to end his football career on a high note, that playing time will only be secured at another university. It's a win-win situation for the player. I'm happy that he's earned his degree and that will set him up for life, but if he has aspirations to possibly play at the next level, he will be best served by having a stellar season and gain some notoriety this season.

I have a similiar feeling about the Clay/JT situation; along with the T. Carter/JT fiasco.
JT, sometimes, doesn't present a clear picture and leaves many questions.

Re Deboskie-Johnson; 3 years ago I was pumped up for the Johnson/Briggs/Yarnway
backfield. What seemed like a promising backfield has vaporized.
There could be a similiar trend at QB.

The wasting QB talent trend has been going on much longer than the RB trend.

Not sure if Briggs was ever serious but, Yarnway keeps getting injured and CDJ never got a chance. In 2010, while Vereen was getting run into the ground, JT was enamored with Sofele and never considered CDJ. 2011, Sofele became the featured back, had more attempts than Vereen the season before and CJ brought power back to the position. Glad to see he's walking away with a degree but, disappointed we couldn't see his talent come through. He was the only back last year who could string together moves and hit the hole.

Briggs was serious. He entered early and some were touting him as the
'2nd coming of Lynch'.

Is it really JT who decided CDJ's fate? If anything I think Gould probably had more voice in the matter. Given that we took a number of RB transfers last year, the writing was on the wall for CDJ.

Tree Cutter; you are right on re the history of QBs.
With the current trend it won't be long before Cal will be thought of a blackhole for QBs.
A load of capable QBs with not enough time/effort/knowledge to develop them.

Remember James Montgomery, Tracy Slocum? We recruit a lot of four star running backs. They all can't play and this is what happens.

Yarnway 3.6 ypc
CDJ 3.3 ypc

This is totally different from our QB situation. The comparisons are really dumb.

We haven't had an awesome QB since Rodgers left. So the problem is clearly with QB recruitment and development.

We have had nothing but great RBs during the Tedford era. I respect CDJ and his family, but let's be clear -- he just wasn't good enough. We didn't "waste" his talent. It wasn't as if he was wasting away on the bench when we were playing a bunch of no talent hacks. We have had some truly awesome RBs, and CDJ just wasn't good enough to unseat them.

IS, Anderson, Lasco, and Bigelow well be carrying it. Won't give up on Yarnway yet if he is healthy. Players do get injured or are played over.

which games are you basing this off of? he had few carries, and even less meaningful ones. if there's one position i wouldn't question the staff on, it would be RB. Coach G has more than proved himself to be an expert at his craft, and if CDJ was not playing, better believe there was a damn good reason.

I dunno, I post on an internet message board so I'm pretty much the authority on running backs and the college running game.

The Ivy League prohibits athletic participation by graduate students (even those who have athletic eligibility remaining and who went to the same school for undergrad) and the Patriot League prohibits athletic participation by graduate students who got their undergraduate degrees at a different school.
