Actually he got flagged for unsportsmanlike later for head butting Dez Bishop. They were both laughing though.

NYC was saying he called for taunting on the return.

Should have said "Also" as I understood his post and was adding that Hawk had a busy nite..

You should have read it closer. It makes sense how he posted it. Especially because his later penalty hadn't even happened yet.

The young man appears to be very undisciplined. The first penalty he not only did a stupid thing by holding the ball out (not just because it appears to be taunting, but because I have seen other players do this idiocy and drop the ball before crossing the goal line), then he took off his helmet. And that was just the first penalty. The second one was every bit as stupid. He is a great player. I'm happy he plays well. But he needs to man up as far as his onfield behavior is concerned.

Might you have been thinking of this guy....?

No need to worry about following Hawkins. After his undisciplined play tonight, he will be the first guy cut on Tuesday...

We've seen plenty of unsportsmanlike calls that are questionable judgement calls (Jake Locker had a particularly bad one, and we've suffered a few ourselves) but then there are those simple bright lines that would seem easy to follow -- like, don't take your helmet off when you're out on the field. Period. I mean, how hard is that?

In the interview after the game, he told the Comcast gal that he was going to visit Harbaugh's office and tell the Coach that he's not sure what got "into" him and that it would never happen again.

He also said that he's "not that kind of guy" that wants to draw attention to himself, and that it's ALL about the TEAM.

Could have fooled me.
He had a busy night.

Those calls against Hawk were pretty harsh by NFL standards, for one thing he only removed his helmet after stepping out of bounds, so that particular cal lwas wrong, and the taunting call is borderline, he got called for holding the ball out wide on his way to the endzone. It seems like the NFL is now adopting NCAA standards with celebrations.

Actually they head-butted each other, just like the teammates they had been. Lavelle and Desmond were having a moment, not the uniforms.

BTW, Desmond had a big night, too.

I agree. Seems like the NFL is really trying to crackdown on the celebration stuff this season...

Looks like Hawkins made it through the first batch of cuts. Niners still have 85 men on the roster that'll need to be trimmed to 75 by tomorrow 1PM.

Why shouln't they; behavior like this is making the NFL a joke.

I think they're being a bit harsh on Lavelle -- hard to see that as taunting. But also, even that amount of bravado is very strange for him. Lavelle is one of the most laid back and respectful football players I know. He's very gracious and not at all flashy or full of himself -- a strong family man with a strong faith. He'll never ever be a DeSean Jackson type.

I hope the 49ers hold onto him -- it'd be great having him back in the Bay Area, and it will be a lot easier for his family in Stockton to get to see him play.

This is the thing I don't get about the over-the-top negative reactions to Lavelle's penalties last night: it's as if some people had never seen Lavelle play before and had no reason to give him the benefit of the doubt. It's as if he hadn't earned any respect for the way he played and conducted himself at Cal, like he was just some random guy who walked off the street.

I see him as a Cal player, one that I've never seen or heard anything negative about. He's represented Cal well in the NFL. I root for him like I do all other Cal players in the NFL. Also, sometimes refs are f*cking idiots.

I have many reasons to cut Lavelle some slack and support him against people calling him stupid, idiotic, thuggish, etc.

+1000, its a bit of an elitist attitude that we cal alums have. we dumb it down much more than our furd counterparts but its still there. sometimes we need to check ourselves about being overly-rightous in our own ways.

Well, if Richard Sherman was a Cal alum, I'd still think he was a dirty dick.

Yeah, I didn't get to see all of the game and when a friend told me that Lavelle was called for taunting, etc. I was completely surprised. As I recall him, he's not that kind of guy. I hope he has built up some goodwill with the coaching staff. Sounds like he had a heck of a night performance-wise. Hope Harbaugh sees past the penalties and keeps him on the squad. He's a clutch player and I think will pay dividends for the 9ers. Best thing about all of this is that it happened in pre-season.

+1. Hawk was not taunting. He might have got a little excited and showed off a bit, but he was not pointing the ball at a defender and taunting him. He should not have taken off his helmet. That was clearly a mistake, but he acknowledged his mistake. The headbutt was him saying hi to a old friend and former teammate, not an attempt to fight. The ref just overreacted on the headbutt.
