Construction will begin in January to turn Maxwell Family Field, the playing field near the stadium, into a 450-space parking garage with a field on top. The university brought in a third party to finance, construct, and run the new parking garage. Cal didn't have to expend any funds of the project, and it will earn income when the operators pay rent and a portion of the profits.

Interesting that Bob Lalanne was just appointed vice chancellor for real estate. Didn't he play football at Cal?

I like this guy. Seems like he will bring necessarily leadership and build bridges among all Cal and Berkeley constituents.

I wish him the best.

Also, he might be the only guy to do something about People's Park. He's not on the school's payroll so maybe he feels invincible to the criticisms.

Incredible. He's going to donate his salary back to the university.

We can hope.

People's Park has been a blight on Berkeley for decades. UC Administration (read: Chancellors) have had little stomach for a fight with the City on this piece of land. If they cowered and wavered on the volleyball courts issue, it only re-inforces how weak-willed UC Administration has been on People's Park.

More student housing, anyone?

Yes, more student housing is in order. Hopefully, Lalanne will stick around long enough to see some kind of development there soon. The timing can't be better with a new chancellor at the helm.

Do you mean more parking at Maxwell or turn People's Park into a 4-story garage?

My question is whether the new structure will change the elevation of Maxwell/Kleeberger field. Will it interfere with the view of Bowles - one of the more picturesque buildings on campus.

I'm all for more parking, but didn't the agreement with the Hill people prevent the parking garage at Maxwell? Or did that get thrown out with all of the subsequent lawsuits and whatnot?

The new field will be at 405', with entrances to the lower level off of gayley at 385' and off of stadium way at 395'. the small narrow parking lot above maxwell is now 400' and the lower plaza CMS with ticketing is 394'. I can't really tell from the maps, but I think bowles is 432' because there is a significant hill in front.

I think the agreement was to limit the parking to ~550 spots instead of the initial proposal of 900. The 900 spots would have meant digging 4 levels below ground - super expensive. maybe the plan all along was to propose way too big and settle for what was actually intended.

Short answer - Yes.

If you're standing on the west side of Gayley Rd/Piedmont Ave (basically in front of the Haas Business School), the parking structure will cut off the view of almost all of the lawn in front of Bowles as well as the bottom floors on the west end.

Wouldn't that be ironic? The plot of land that is People's Park was meant to become a parking lot before the protests started.

This looks tastefully done. Of course, the more we can cover it all with trees and other greenery, the better.
