at least he didn't commit to Northwestern..?

I have noticed that a gpa in the "low 3s" has suddenly become CAL material in the last cycle. The spin machine is pumping along.

On a serious note though: Who are the QBs that we are serious about? This list seems to keep changing as kids choose elsewhere. What is the possibility of us not taking one this year?

that has been true for many positions that are not OL (which tends to be more....cerebral?). on the whole, i'm sure avg. GPA of guys recruited have gone up though. but to say we're not taking chances on certain guys is stretching the truth..

well at this point it's more like: who's serious about us? i mean, we just offered Bowers over the weekend after a supposedly good showing, but his junior year stats leave a looooot to be desired.

as it stands now, i'd prefer we didn't use up a schollie. but, i mean, we could always find another Aaron Rodgers, right? RIGHT??

With recruiting, I tend to be a "I'll worry about who we get in Feb rather than who we don't get in July." kind of guy. I understand your concern as options come off the board though.

IMO, we need a QB recruit period, even if my grandma is the best we can get. Take the best we can. That being said, if the good options are off the board or not biting now, I'd wait and see what develops during the football season. Might get lucky with a Boller type guy who gets his opportunity late.

this is true, but with QBs, they tend to be off the board early, not switch commitments, and recruit for their teams throughout the year. second concern is the way we've handled QB recruiting, offering/recruiting 1 at a time, and moving down the list after we strike out with each. hey Rosen, you're our #1 guy. hey White, you're our #1 guy after that season. hey Browning, you're our #1 guy and you're local. hey Waller, we should've offered earlier, but you're our #1 guy.

of course, we could always find another "diamond in the rough" down the stretch; we're really good that. or maybe Bowers--our last uncommitted offeree--will have a monster senior season and put to rest any concerns.

C'mon. This years QB recruiting is a lost cause. QBs go early and rarely flip. Even if we tear it up its hard to see someone flipping.

I in general believe in a QB a year but I also don't think we should use a scholly on an unlikely prospect given we will probably have a relatively restricted number this year.

I don't even like the Bowers offer. I would prefer we waited to see if his senior year was more impressive than his junior. Or see whomever else developed as a senior.

With UO on the table, why would QB Waller go to ND unless he is contemplating a religious career?

So is Bowers. He's not some desperate reach. I saw him throw and liked him better than Waller, though camp settings are different than games.

Bowers would've had an offer earlier if he were more of a running quarterback. Personally, I don't think they should always favor mobility over arm strength and pocket presence so adding a more traditional QB would be a good thing, IMO.

As for grades, low 3's has always been a Cal kind of recruit. There are some in the high 3's and low 4's every year but low 3's has always been in the Cal wheelhouse.

With ND on the table why would you go to Orygun unless you wanted a worthless degree:beer:

I'm sure his mom's a little disappointed, though she'd never interfere in his decision. She'd have loved him to go to Cal or ND. She's all about academics.

Waller had to have something like a 3.5 just for her to allow him to play sports.

Always good to see families hold their student athlete kids to higher academic standards.

I talked to him yesterday. Sounded positive for Cal. Didn't sound like he was going to do it immediately but I had the impression it would be sooner than later.

He could've decided to wait to see if he blows up at the Elite 11 but much better for Cal if he locks things up ealier.

lol I don't think it's much of a decision between Cal and Colorado St. so we should feel extremely confident about this. and QBs don't really wait that long to commit, so bowers would be smart to lock in with us now

No, it would be smart for him to wait. He might do really well at Elite 11 and get "big time" offers. But as a Cal fan, I prefer he pulls the trigger now.

By the way, Browning and Hilinski did not make Elite 11 finals. I recall these were two names some posters wanted more than Bowers.

And as a fwiw white didn't do so hot at the rivals challenge. Apparently only threw to one side of the field and was doing a lot of staring down of his receivers

well he can always commit and if a better offer comes along then de-commit. generally qb's try to lock up a spot earlier because most schools only take 1 qb per year. FWIW, I know that this is a heralded QB class but Waller and Rosen are the only qb's that I like as much as Rubenzer last year. White, Browning, Hilinski, I dont they're as good. Think that theyd all end up sitting behind RBZ anyway

imo he'd be smart to pull the trigger to hold his spot at Cal. he could always flips if a big time school offers. (like Barnett from ND to Bama)

as many Sonny apologists and defenders have said, "Elite 11 guys are all busts, like Kline and Hinder". so there's that...

and i'd definitely want a proven, local guy like Browning, who put up ~6000 yds passing, than a guy like Bowers at this point, Elite 11 or not.

CSU's been on him a long time and Cal just offered. CSU's a bowl team and a program he has a strong relationship with so I'm sure Cal's not lol'ing their chances coming off 1-11.

And yes, if he waited a few weeks for the Elite 11, he could well see his options open significantly so painting this as some desperate decision he should make isn't exactly fair to Bowers.

that would be ridiculous.

if Cal cannot feel extra confident against CSU just bc of those reasons, then we are in way worse shape than we thought.

i'd understand being outrecruited by perennial PAC12 bottom-dweller Colorado, but COLORADO STATE?? even Boise State under Petersen couldn't some 3-stars against top tier conferences, and BSU was always winning. we have infinitely more to offer, so it doesn't really matter what his connections with CSU was and Cal's record was.

Yeah seriously. I can understand if he has some special connection to CSU or if it's right before signing day and we jump it...but neither are the case here. What next? Losing recruits to San Jose St?

I think Cal will get him but if they start to try and big time recruits with Mountain West offers, it would be an ill-advised move until they right the ship.

Fans can be outraged all they want but they've got plenty of challenges to overcome -something I thnk they've done well so far with the group of commits they have.

big-time recruits with MW offers? they just offered him last weekend, why would Cal be big-timing him?

The QB recruiting is I think sorta emblematic of what happened last year and the fallout. The OL recruiting in contrast COULD...COULD be like the polar opposite and make me feel a lot better about the recruiting going forward. Win some games and the other position groups could follow suit with a bump, but more than likely the QB boat has already sailed....

Waller looks like a really good fit with the quack O. That guy could be torturing us for years.

The above response = textbook definition of big-timing if that's how the Cal staff approaches Bowers.

how exactly did Cal approach Bowers? they evaluated him at multiple camps, and then TF decided he was worthy of an offer after this weekend's camp after a supposedly great performance. that sounds fair given his mediocre jr. season.

how is that big-timing? bc Cal can assume they are able to land a guy whose only other offer is Colorado State? i don't believe Cal needs to recruit a guy like Bowers the same way they would need to recruit a guy like Browning, and the staff probably doesn't either.

SD: "Cal recruits itself". it's Colorado State, ffs.

Why don't you and Pod harp on Grant and Mark about whats going on rather than run to the other board complaining about the response you get here? At least you pay those guys to respond to you.
