Has anyone seen the newly released documentary on Netflix, "Making a Murderer?" I'm bringing this up because 1) it's a very good documentary that I'm sure will gain more and more popularity, and 2) I noticed we have a lot of lawyers in BI and I wanted to get your take on the legal aspects of the film (e.g., what went right/wrong with the DA, the "framing" collusion between DA/ police/ public defender Kachinsky, etc.).

I watched it. Very good documentary. It was amazing how much access and footage they were able to get.

I wish the filmmakers spent more time on alternative suspects. Also, it would have been interesting to hear from the jurors involved in both Steven's and his nephew's trials.

I watched the first episode the other night and thought it was VERY well done, and am looking forward to watching all 10 episodes. Crazy long format documentary, so I'll be interested to see how they fill that much time. As to the first case, it was very frustrating to watch the many examples of prosecutorial misconduct, not to mention the fact that the judge was (apparently) unaware of how witness misidentifications take place, even in cases of rape. I have no knowledge of the murder case yet so I can't comment.

Looking forward to our own BI lawyers take on the documentary! The documentary successfully influenced me to feel like multiple parties were colluding directly or indirectly: the judge, the DA, various police, etc.

Thanks for the heads up. Though I'm an attorney, I'm not a criminal attorney -- but my husband is a public defender, so I'll see if I can get him to watch it. It'll be interesting to see what he thinks, but I can guess it'll be somewhere on the line of "I don't want to watch this. I don't want to have to think about work while I'm at home."

Wife and I just started last night and are 4 episodes in. Extremely good though the depth of corruption and ineptitude had me convinced this was not a true story.

I watched the whole thing over the last few days. I was hooked.
Very good, but very frustrating too.

I also wanted to have them focus on other potential suspects...

I'll watch it after the new year...I hate that they release something must-see just before the holidays, when it's not something I want to get hooked on during my vacation.

I keep almost wathing it...but I really had planned to catch up on other things for months during this break..

Here's Jason Whitlock's take:

I keep hearing people going crayz over how good it is. Here's Charlie Brooker, a well-respected British media critic (and creator of the accalimed TV show Black Mirror):

Is this like an Adnan Syed Serial type of show?

Just one episode in, the similarities are there. Speaking of which, the new Serial about Bowe Bergdahl is pretty good as well. At first I didn't think it would be as compelling as Syed's case, but as the season has progressed I've become hooked. I think just the skill and talent of the This American Life crew and Sarah Koenig in particular make for a must listen.

I will + the comments for Peaky Blinders. Loved that series. Can't wait for the next season. Lots of great characters, but I think I like Tom Hardy's the best. Dude is a bad ass actor.

Nice! That Scotsman lead singer was grossly underrated. He died prematurely.

I knocked out all 10 episodes yesterday while stuck at home sick. While it's shocking how this family of basically mentally disabled people are treated by investigators and the county, it's obvious the documentary is biased. Here's a nice summary of omitted info I came across:

That's fine, but as your link says:

Quote:

To a certain extent, whether Avery and Dassey were guilty or not, like in the Adnan Syed case, it doesn’t matter. The series revealed massive flaws in our legal system. There was unquestionably reasonable doubt in Avery’s case...

If that case doesn't have reasonable doubt, I don't think most jurys are equipped to deal with the concept.

If they raped and stabbed her in the bedroom then where is the blood? I didn't feel these guys had the mental capacity to hide the crime. Also...What does the blood and hair in her car tell us? They go for a joy ride in the car before deciding to burn her?

Nor the concept of coerced false confessions. The lawyering for bassey, even at the trial level, seemed to me to be innefective. it would appear from the documentary that they didn't bring in an expert to explain how coercive the cops tactics were. And their re-direct of bassey to rehabilitate him was seriously lacking. It wasn't enough for him to just say "i don't know" why he was lying in the "confessions." God it was frustrating to watch.

Don't get me started on the pre-trial attorney and investigator. That guy should be disbarred.

Interesting read. If these omitted details are factual, then it does seem that Steven is guilty of the murder. After watching the series I still felt that Avery was the killer only because of lack of other credible suspects. If it wasn't Avery, who could it possibly be?

In either case, the police and prosecutors were shady as fuk.
