Cal sideline question

Why does Cal choose to stand on the non-pressbox side of Memorial Stadium? Especially out in the sun? Isn't it better for the home team to stand on the same side as the press box and in the shade too? Isn't it better for booth coaches to be looking in the same direction as the sideline coaches?

League rule. All home teams are opposite the press box.

I have believed that it is a league rule as well with the thought of preventing the home team from stealing the visitors signals.

I was confused this year at Big Game when Stanford was on the same side as their press box.

Perhaps the correct answer might be the location of the student section. I noticed Stanford's student section by the goal line rather than behind the visiting team.

Many home teams are at a disadvantage since they have to look into the sun most of the game (this is true at Cal, UCLA, etc.).

It was with this thought that a few Orange County alumni donated cooling fans for the team.

It's because of the student section. Can't have the opposing team in front of the students. Nothing to do with the press box.

Now that you mention it, that's the first time I have ever seen Cal on that sideline at Stanford. And I've been to 25 Big Games at Stanford....
Strange.

What if there aren't any students at the game?

Better ask the Furd this.

I believe Cal was on that same sideline in 2009 when Mohamed picked Luck to secure the win.

It's the student section.

Leave it to the Cal athletic department to intentionally put ourselves at a competitive disadvantage by leaving our players in the sun all game while our opponents get shade.

With so many night games nowadays, it hardly makes any difference.

I believe it has been that way since Memorial opened. It certainly has been this way since I saw my first Cal home game in 1959.(I was a Freshman in HS.

I always thought it was for two reasons: 1. the cardstunts would show up better in the sunlight as opposed to the shade; 2. sunlight made it warmer throughout the year and if it got a little too hot in the early Fall, the students could easily shed some of their unnecessary clothing. Thereby making student-watching a little more interesting. nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

The number of self loathing nonsensical gripes on the board is sometime really hard to take. These are well trained athletes and the Bay Area isn't even hot. OK, it sucks to sit in the stands when it's 70 and sunny because the sun reflects off the concrete and metal you might have to shower after the game before you go on with the day and have dinner at chez panisse. But top notch athletes should never ever have a problem at bay area temperatures. And for late season games, I'd guess the sunny side of the field is actually desirable.

Disadvantage? Strangely enough, guess who else in the p12 has their home bench on the sunny side of the field? More like guess who doesn't. Arizona, ASU, UCLA, USC, Oregon, Colorado and Washington all occupy that sunny side. Some have had recent renovations to their stadiums and have continued to put their bench on the sunny side despite moving the student sections to the endzones.

add wazzu, utah and oregon state to that list... i guess everyone in the p12 just doesn't care about winning.

student section has to be on that side (unless it were moved to the endzone) because the premium seats are on the shade side and near the pressbox (where the clubs are). Students can't be on the same side as opponents' teams (per NCAA); ergo Cal is on the sun side.

Between this and the "Aaron Rodger" thread, hanky1 is really on a roll.

I wondered why the sideline didn't put some tents or screens up to provide some shade for the injured and/ or linemen along with the cooling fans

2007:
Looks like in this initial Big Game at the new stadium we were on the sideline near the press box. This is a band video, but you can tell by the blue/gold sideline mats.

2009:
We've moved to the far sideline now...
Just to make you smile...remember when Big Games were happy days for us?

2011:
Stanford still on the press box side.

2013:
Bad for your health to watch this...

2015:
Ugh...

I was going to comment on the heat in the Bay Area and CMS but you beat me to it! I love those who think anything above 72 is hot, and anything below 69 is cold. I want to take half of them to a September game at LSU, and the other half to a late November game at Penn State..ha.
