Moraga or other insiders, how come the classy, gold-lettered "UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA" that was affixed to the wall beneath the pressbox (and behind the Premium Seats) was changed to read "UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA BERKELEY" later on? For the 1st year or so in the renovated Memorial, I know if definitely did not include the "BERKELEY" addendum, and wondered why that change was even made?

Apologize in advance if this is a boothable offense of a question, since the change was made at least a couple years ago.

hmm, they sure snuck that one by us. I never noticed the change.

I blame Dirks, though.

2013 (still 'University of California'):

Also, fUCLA. they probably were jealous.

It's bullshit. All Birgeneau's dual branding which is creating a school called "Cal-Berkeley." A name nobody wanted!!! The culture of Cal is under sttack with Birgeneau's view of a Euro/Canadian college. Dirks just follows. Next, the University of California monument sign at the west entrance. Birgeneau has wanted just "Berkeley."

I would rather have this than UC Berkeley, Cal-Berkeley, or University of California Berkeley. Just got with Berkeley or California FOR FUCKING SAKE.

You're correct. So in 2012 and 2013, the signage was UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA. Then it changed in 2014 to include BERKELEY.

Maybe Moraga knows why on earth they elected to change it. I liked it better the way it was in '12 and '13.

No need to apologize. Blame this on the stupid administration at CAL; these people are clueless. There is no need to add "Berkeley" after the University of California. Does Michigan add Ann Arbor, does Maryland add College Park, does Ohio State add Columbus. The stupid administration thinks others will get confused over which campus is being referred to if its just the University of California. Do they know all the all UC systems schools are "at" schools, like at Los Angeles.

No, instead of being proud that we are the "mother ship" and deserve to be called the University of California, they worry about what other people think and what other people will act on. This is pure weakness and stupidity.

If they would just drop Berkeley from all future references and start using the University of California, people would get the message of who we are; there would be no confusion because all the other UC schools use the city name.

It's no wonder we haven't been to the Rose Bowl in over 50 years; we have idiots running the school; they are lucky to find their way to work every day.

None of those other state university systems have other schools remotely as prestigious as their flagship campus. We do.

While I generally agree with the sentiment the we are the University of California, the incessant whining over the slight of being specifically referred to as Berkeley comes across as insecure. Cal grads know their place in the pecking order and so does most everyone else, most keenly our cousins within the UC system.

On May 24, 1866 -- 150 years ago! -- the founders of the University of California decided to name the campus "Berkeley" after Bishop George Berkeley.

The town and the city of Berkeley came later.

It makes absolute sense to name a university after a legendary academic.

This isn't the case with Ohio State and Columbus.

This isn't the case with University of Maryland and College Park.

This isn't the case with University of Michigan and Ann Arbor.

"Berkeley" is an inextricable part of the university, whether you like it or not.

You know what, I don't like it. And it has nothing to do with what I said. Berkeley was not attached to the University of California like it is today in the 50's. If what you say is the reason, why wasn't Berkeley used as an attachment right at the beginning of it's founding prior to the founding of other UC's?

Our brand is Berkeley both nationally and internationally. Any reason to deviate from that for archaic reasons is shooting ourselves in the foot for the sake of pride.

My point is that we're not adopting a city name -- that the name "Berkeley" was always a part of the university.

But you're wondering when/why did we go from "University of California" to "Berkeley" or "University of California, Berkeley."

Here's my speculation:

I think the change began to take place in the 30s and 40s, when "Berkeley's" scientific research was becoming nationally famous.

I think Berkeley became shorthand for the university.

Here are several letters sent to and from Robert Oppenheimer from 1931 and 1943 in which "Berkeley" is used as shorthand for the university.

By March 1962, when John F. Kennedy visited campus, "Berkeley" had become the official way of referring to our school.

Here's my argument: I don't mind it being used in sports settings. In fact, hearing "California vs. Texas" is awesome and much preferable to "Berkeley vs. Texas."

But in an academic setting, the thing is (as I've argued before) is that the University of California system ended up becoming a prestigious system.

"University of California" brings to mind a network of prestigious schools, not a single university.

The same can't be said for other university systems. There are other schools besides University of Texas at Austin, but are they well-known?

Same for the University of Tennessee system, etc., etc.

"Berkeley," on the other hand, brings to mind a prestigious university, nationally and internationally. (The annoying city of Berkeley is not the first thing people around the world think about when you mention "Berkeley.")

To quote you: "University of California" brings to mind a network of prestigious schools, not a single university.

Maybe in someone else's mind but not mine. To me, when you say The University of California it means the Berkeley campus and nothing else. The reason being, all the other schools are identified by a city.

In our case the city's name was inspired by the University.

Not to hijack the thread, but is that your diploma? I was a PEIS major, too, but far closer to its founding than to its conclusion. Was 2011 just about the last year that the major existed? I heard the name has been changed to... what is it called now?

Don't always like my alma mater being associated with the City and the branding implications, but this is dead on. People have been thinking of the school as Berkeley for a long time, whether we like it or not. I'm not taking a position on the sign change however.

Not my diploma. I've always thought the major had a strange title during school but looking back, it does seem to cover a lot of ground.

It's just called Political Economy now. It's still popular on campus.

I am certain if you did a survey of Cal grads who have left the state to work elsewhere after graduation, they would confirm that the "Berkeley" name is the one that people in the remainder of the country and the world most recognize and respond to (and highly positively). That was certainly the case in my own 40-year career.
barabbas
How long do you want to ignore this user?
What has been positively been achieved by Changing the schools name from UC Berkeley to Berkeley? It has done nothing but confuse and be divisive.Dropping Cal and school colors along the University California is not a winning branding strategy. Dropping Cal as a moniker for the school and isolating it o athletics is divisive and inauthentic. "Berkeley" was alive and well as part of the Cal/UC Berkeley brand. The campaign has been a failure and created, out of confusion, the brand nobody wanted "Cal-Berkeley!" You can't change the truth; the truth is the campus is still Cal, UC Berkeley and the University of California. It's a EuroCanadian model championed by a foreigner, Bob Birgeneau.

I went to Berkeley for college.

I root for Cal or California in sports.

Easy peasy.
