I know that he can obviously coach football and seems to be a nice man but I gotta be honest no way on earth would I let my son play for a guy who's a devout member of the church of Scientology. Not trying to ruffle anybody's feathers here but everything I've read, heard and seen about it makes my blood boil. I am surprised this hasn't been brought up before considering we have a program crush on him.

Petersen*

Are you sure you looked up the right one? I've never heard of him being a member of the "church" of Scientology and I live in Idaho amongst his cult following. Haha.

He doesn't seem like he would be.

But I could be wrong.

Let's say there is a God, and he is omniscient, and he cares whether you believe in an organized religion, or in a divine creator, or whatever you want to believe is enough for your insurance policy. Don't you think God would see right through the fact you only "believe" as an insurance policy? Is that honest? Frankly, I think agnosticism is the most honest belief system. There is no way we can know. Why would God hold my honesty against me?

I predict a 3,000 page thread.

That said, as long as its not one or one of the many religions that have abused hundreds of thousands of children and then passed the abusers along. I can live with it. It's amazing how people are obsessed with this one "religion" who as far as I know is not one of the many with lawsuits totaling into the Billions. If it is then I am sick just like you for bringing it up.

Yes it would bother me but no, I find it hard to believe that Chris Peterson would be a Scientologist!!

From what I'm seeing, I don't think he is. That is based on:
* Nothing mentioned about it in mainstream sources at all, including when they're talking about Petersen personally, his morality etc.
* Only mentions I see of it are on fan boards without any backup
* Many mentions on those fan boards are refuted by someone mentioning a misreference about a Scientologist named Chris Peterson rather than Coach Chris Petersen
* Many mentions on those fan boards are refuted by someone (saying they're) from Boise saying they attended a (non-Scientology) church where Petersen and family were members

I am not a religious bigot. Especially not based on rumors about some persons religion or lack of religion.

I'm not making a judgment on faith, though. I'm strictly referring to Pascal's Wager, which is what bearsandgiants claimed is his reason for "believing", as opposed to an agnostic who doesn't believe we can know the truth.

God would prefer that he pretend to believe what he actually does not? And God can't be bothered to convince him otherwise? I mean, the dude's soul is at stake here.

Just had conversation with a new acquaintance about football, then asked him which is the bigger social opiate? Pro football or religion. Then he proceeded to tell me that he goes to church every Sunday and couldn't give that up. Still trying to get the shoe out of my mouth two days later.

If somebody is a really good all-around coach, my son/daughter can play for them, no matter their faith (or lack thereof), unless they proselytize as part of their program (and then I wouldn't consider them a good all-around coach anyway).

The Atheist and the Bear!

An atheist was taking a walk through the woods, admiring all that the evolution had created. "What majestic trees! What powerful rivers! What beautiful animals!", he said to himself.

As he was walking alongside the river he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to look. He saw a 7-foot grizzly charge towards him. He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over his shoulder and saw that the bear was closing.

He ran even faster, so scared that tears were coming to his eyes. He looked over his shoulder again, and the bear was even closer. His heart was pumping frantically and he tried to run even faster. He tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw the bear right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him.

At that instant the Atheist cried out "Oh my God!...."
Time stopped.
The bear froze.
The forest was silent.
Even the river stopped moving.

As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky, "You deny my existence for all of these years; teach others I don't exist; and even credit creation to a cosmic accident. Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?"

The atheist looked directly into the light "It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask You to treat me as Christian now, but perhaps could you make the bear a Christian?"

"Very well," said the voice.
The light went out.
The river ran again.
And the sounds of the forest resumed.
And then the bear dropped his right paw ..... brought both paws together...bowed his head and spoke:

"Lord, for this food which I am about to receive, I am truly thankful...AMEN!"

Chis Petersen is a good man. He absolutely is not a member of that dubious religion, Scientology.

How dare you slander a good man!

I should know. Petersen and I belong to the same church.

The Church of Satan.

That is certainly a very trendy default-setting knowledge-claim. A problem is when some dogmatically hold to it as obvious absolute truth from the very start, precluding really honest, unbiased investigations. A foundational assumption is taken for an unbiased process leading to an honest conclusion rather than for the personal meta-narrative (determined/influenced by tribal upbringing/environment) that it is. Even if a personal deity were to generously reveal his nature and will to our limited minds via analogy in various and diverse manners including special revelation, a hyperskeptical epistemological foundation ("there is no way we can know the truth") immediately & completely rejects all means to knowledge of that top-down divine revelation. An issue is not "honestly" resolved by a biased procedure which precludes from the very beginning one of the choices in question. It is one thing to hold that god is unknown to me personally by my sovereign choice; quite another that god is unknowable to all.

I can agree to disagree with you. You have faith, and I have no problem with that. My question, again, is only in those who "believe" based solely on Pascal's wager. To me, that is not true faith, and renders the "wager" meaningless.

The burden of truth in backing up your claim lies with you. Frankly, this sounds like something you read on the Internet and believed without thinking.
