Going back to 2000, Cal has not beaten Stanfurd when their custom mouthguard wearing compliance was below 60%.
Cal last won in 2009, and the compliance was 60%.
Cal's custom mouthguard compliance since then has been steadily dropping.
When Cal had a 60% or greater custom mouthguard compliance, Cal won 7 out of 8 Big Games.
Since the custom mouthguard compliance has dropped below 60%, Cal has lost 8 Big Games in a row.

If one watched/watches the yesterday's Big Game on TV, one would have/will seen/see that Cal's center, one of the more vocal positions, had to spit out his stock mouthguard to call out, then reach down and put the mouthguard in place. This happened many times.
If the defense changed after being set, the center would not have any opportunity to verbally communicate.

Problem solved. Straight from the horse's mouth.
