I can see it coming: a close hard-fought game. It's 3rd and short and the Bears desperately need a stop. But instead of the fans on their feet jumping up and down and screaming...the mic man has his finger in his ear staring blankly at the field, while the PA plays "Sweet Caroline".

The guy running the PA/music was on crack today.

Twice we had piped in music while an injured player was down.

There was one moment after a punt, commercial timeout where the music was playing, the on-field DJ was telling us something, and the ref was explaining a penalty, all simultaneously.

We heard positive reviews about some t shirt cannons

According to PAC12 and NCAA rules, there is no band music or piped in music when there is a player injury.

Didn't see cannons. Saw people throwing t-shirts...

I think the student section tried to start a "Hey alumni! Go!..." cheer. I'm not sure because they were doing it during a commercial time-out with music blaring over the PA.

The fact that they would start a cheer during a commercial indicates the mic-man has no feel for the role of cheering in the flow of the game.
The fact that they would start a cheer while the PA is blaring indicates that his ears are not connected to his brain.

That was the first game for the two new mic men. Maybe cut them just a little slack. I think both of the new guys have tremendous potential. I'm encouraged.

I think athletics has made tremendous progress in game day experience. It's not perfect but it's massively better than it used to be. The band plays WAY more. There are far fewer commecials blaring. There is far less music playing. Sitting in the student section my fellow undergrads actually commented it was nice to be able to talk with each other. See, millenials and Gen Zs, don't need to be non-stop bombarded. I also love when the band plays the first couple bars of Big C each time the offense takes the field after a change of possession. Doing that right out of commercial break is brilliant, so people watching can hear. And it's a GREAT way to associate the one and only Big C with us, not not with that hollywoodized version used by UC San Diego... I'm sorry, I am mean UC Los Angeles (they're all sort of the same to me).

I think if the AD continues with this they will start getting people coming back in for "the experience." This is one of those things where you don't see the fruits of your efforts right away (because you're eliminating a negative < what was awful fan experience > that's just harder to notice), but awareness of it will build over time, and the increased enjoyment will then reinforce people's decision to go to games.

I think it's important people acknolwedge the positive changes. As in any organziation, if all people do is complain even when the department is implementing changes fans want, there will be a tendency to say "we can't make them happy so screw it, we'll just do what we were doing."

GO BEARS!

FiatLux, Was that their first game? Didn't they do North Carolina?

I do agree whole heartedly with your points about the Band -- it's wonderful to hear more of them this year. That's an encouraging development.

It is better and not noticably annoying, except that the Bart races have returned. Maybe have the trains in Oakland being slowed up due to muggers. A guy shooting a gun and the train narrowly escaping.

Yeah, I don't want to come across as Cranky Old Guy Ranting about Cheering Again. So let me balanced and rational here.

The Band is playing markedly more, and that's wonderful.
Commercials are down. On-field introductions of teams and faculty and sponsors....also down. Yesterday there was no god-awful Smile Cam or Bear Hug Cam. But BART races were back...

But here's all I'm asking for:

1. Cooperation between the Band, the mic-men, the on-field DJ, and the PA music. Let them all coordinate as to their roles and timing in a coherent experience (if I had my way there would be no PA music, but that ship has probably sailed.)

2. Crowd noise is major component of home field advantage, and ours is in the hands of people who don't know how to use it. Mic men need to acquire a better feel for the relationship between cheers and game situation. It always feels like each year's mic man has never seen a football game before.

It's not rocket science: make noise on defense, not during commercials. Do a "First Down Bears!" on offense as needed. Do a "Rolll on Yoooou Beeeaaars" when we get a first down past the 50. Do a C - A - L at the beginning of each half.

My BART race suggestion - the trains break down, BART doesn't have enough employees to fix them, and massive delays seem imminent, then Oski comes in and saves the day.

Would piping in Taps when a player on the opposing team gets injured be considered poor taste?

Sweet Caroline should be banned by the NCAA as well.

I happily noted less annoying on-field introductions. Although I listen to the game from the stands via radio on an industrial noise-reduction headset anyway. The mic man seemed charismatic enough although yeah, maybe they could have coordinated better but I didn't think it was really bad or anything... and it wasn't like this was a game whose outcome would have been affected in any way by the home crowd.

Did anyone catch all the cover songs the band played? I heard Dick Dale's Misirlou, some 80s song I think that I can't name, and at least one other.

It doesn't help that some of the mic men (the asian one in particular) doesn't seem to recognize that we tend to go no-huddle. Often times he'll start cheers way too late while our team is at the line of scrimmage and bleeds into the actual play. On defense, chants start way too late as well; I remember yesterday a Defense Bears chant that started after the ISU offense had already made its adjustments and continued for about 5 seconds after the snap. Like, dude, you don't have to face the crowd when you're speaking into the mic. Maybe turn around once in a while so that you actually know what's happening out on the field.

I thought the two new guys showed better awareness; there was one where ISU kept the offense out on the field for a 4th down, and the mic-men started making noise pretty much immediately. Might be a low bar, but like it or not that's the bar that has been set the last few years.

I heard Fat Bottomed Girls, which they've been playing since it was new; Smells Like Teen Spirit (a personal fave); theme from Game of Thrones; and something I've heard many other bands do before, but not Cal: O Fortuna.

They also played a-ha Take on Me,to which I sung along with gusto and was heartened that so many of my fellow undergrads knew the words (even if they knew the words in the same way we knew the words to 60s hits....)
