Why do we let the band come to memorial ?

They are horrible disrespectful guests. It seems like the trojan band keeps playing when they should stop. They played during the Bryce Turner memorial on Saturday.

They cannot take turns like every other band. They always play over the Cal band.

Just ban the trojan band. Tell them they are not welcome in Memorial. We wont miss them

U$C band is getting roasted on the Pac 12 Band Facebook page.

Also we need to mic up our band...I know Notre Dame does and they have twice the brass.

the trojan band apologized with a tweet

Most of the responses indicate that people are not believing the apology.

The apology is full of *****..it was not inadvertent because they were told not to play multiple times.

They are what they are and always have been. What I like about them is that they get me fired up to beat U$C.

I think it's the 3rd time. They did this at the first Joe Roth game in 1977 (perhaps it's excusable if they didn't know what was happening), again in 2007, and then again yesterday.

Screw them. Ban their band. Of course, it will mean that ours can't play in the Coliseum in even numbered years, but it robs their fans of their "Weekender" picnic in odd numbered years. There needs to be a consequence for Art Bartner's arrogant, rude, and disrespectful conduct.

Ban them or bring back the oranges.

Without the Toejam band, they're just not the same.

If I'm Knowlton here's what I do.

I announce that based on their behavior Saturday (which was not unique to Saturday as we have seen in the past and as witnessed at ASU), the USC band will not be welcome at Memorial in 2021.

In order for that ban to be lifted in 2023, beginning next year in the LA Coliseum, the Cal band must get seats / posiotion that is equivalent of what we give the SC band in Memorial - that means down low on the endzone NOT BEHIND IT basically on Fig. When these conditions are met, the SC band will be welcome back to Berkeley in 2023.

Further, under no circumstance is a sword allowed in Memorial. SC will not let us have a California flag in the Coliseum, we're certainly not going to let a weapon in Memorial.

It's about time we stop just taking all this crap.

I propose a middle ground solution. Let their band take the field. Then from the North End Zone Tunnel unleash the Dogs of Hell on them (rugby team augmented by rugby team alumni). Oh, and I think we better let them keep that sword. They can even bring that f'ing horse too.

While I am no fan of the USC band and their BS antics, I do think the record should be set straight regarding their playing during the number retirement ceremony and moment of silence during the first Joe Roth Memorial Game. It's quite possible that I am wrong but based on the video clip I have of the ceremony it does not appear that the USC band remained quiet. During the applause, you can hear horns but these horn sounds are from random fans using the plastic horns that were sold at games in the 70s.

For those who didn't stick around for the post-game band concert (and I certainly don't blame you if you didn't), you missed this:

The game ends, and naturally the SC band is playing and the fans are celebrating, yada yada. But then the Cal Band leaves their seats and marches onto the field and lines up in formation for their traditional post-game concert. The band director is on the ladder.

But the SC band keeps playing. The director is staring intently in their direction.

SC band plays Tusk, and Conquest, and their alma mater...and then Tusk again, and Conquest again, and Fight On. Without a pause for breath between songs. Cal Band director is obviously thinking "It's OK...we'll just wait here until you STFU and go home."

After Fight On, that's what they did, and the Cal Band finally got to play on their own field.

F*** those guys.

I dont care. Just win the dam game.

Usc band will always play when they are not supposed to and Cal will never do anything about it, as evidenced by thelast 50 years. The Cal band should do the same thing. I doubt they would be banned if usc isnt. Screwbthe loud piped in music ads. I would rather hear the usc band than that crap. Obviously not during the tribute.

I was just going to say. Seriously? Protesting the SC Band?

Just because we're losing and it hurts doesn't mean we get to remake the rules. And yeah, the SC Band are stuck up and entitled just like a large number of their students. But if we ban them, they ban us. Better seats for our band at the Coliseum? Sorry but - they don't do that for any other school. What makes any of us think they will do it for us?

And while the Cal Band does the best they can under the circumstances (funding, student run, no college credit for being in the band), its a pretty weak and pathetic band. You can barely hear them unless you're right in front of them. A band like SC's is going to take every opportunity to stomp on them. Until our band gets bigger, better and louder - lets keep the focus on the football team. God knows there's enough to talk about with that.

The answer should be "everyone." I've already traded a few messages with him on this myself since the game, but I'm just one voice. He should hear from the entire community. They've crossed a line and they need to be kicked the hell out of our stadium.

I'm not a "huge" supporter of the Cal band, though I enjoy the tradition and appreciate their dedication and love of Cal (even if I'm not passionate about the band).

I don't understand your post at all. If you invited someone into your home every other year, and each time they took a big dump in your family room and swore at your family, would you invite them back? Would you invite them back because the next year you wanted to go to their house where they would make you sit in the garage while everyone else was in the family room?

For me, this has little to do with the band and everything to do with mutual respect. There is no reason USC's band needs to be in Memorial stadium if they are going to act that way. And certainly, post game, Cal's band should have priority in completing their performance - USC should perform elsewhere. Or maybe there's an agreement to alternate songs.

If I was Cal this weekend, after the Turner debacle, I would have had security escort the band leaders (if not the entire band) out of the stadium. If anyone else in the stadium had been that disruptive, they would have been kicked out.

Honestly, have some self respect.

I just called and have made an arrangement to set a date and time to talk with Mr. Knowlton to express my anger about not just the $C band, but also some issues related to the noise (piped in crap) and timing of things related to Cal football game day (including but no limited to 8pm kickoffs).

This is not the first time $C band has been jerks. But it is damn well time it is the last.

BTW, I have always opposed the mic-ing of Cal Band. But if the A.D. wants to pipe in all the other sh__, then let's mic Cal Band louder than the other crap.

Here's the problem.....when you mic a band at a stadium such as Memorial Stadium, there is an "echo" effect. It's not a great solution. You'll hear one note on one side of the stadium, and the same note on the other side of the stadium a half second later. I know there are folks who could solve the problem. But it's something that would have to be addressed.

I'm not thrilled with the idea of banning the $C band altogether because as much as I dislike them, they are part of what makes the color and pageantry of college football so great. But I am totally down with banning them at the next home game, and making it clear that they will NOT play over Cal Band, or any Cal related announcements.

BTW, just for fun, I'd be interested in which band you hate more.......the $C band or the stanfurd "banned". It would make for a fun poll.

I'd have to split my vote

I was in section I pretty much right across from the U$C band, and I couldn't hear the tribute to Bryce, I could only see what was on the video board. I don't even know if the tribute called for a moment of silence.
It was incredibly disrespectful of Art Bartner and the U$C band, and somewhat disrespectful for you to say it was small potatoes for the band to continue to play their obnoxious fight song over the tribute to a deceased young player, when they had been given advance notice not to play at that time (and also were told DURING the tribute to stop playing.)

Definitely hate the U$C band more. They are completely rude and disrespectful; I've even seen their band members physically obstruct (& attempt to squish) Cal band members at times when the Cal band had to pass through part of the $C band as Cal Band was taking the field.
I feel more pity than hate for the Stanfurd band. Their antics are usually just stupid, though at times have crossed the line.

Good for you. As I'm sure you're aware, there is little Knowlton can do about the kickoff times (at least during this media contract) but it's good that he knows that people don't like it for the next round of negotiations.

If other bands can handle being miked, ours should as well.

TomBear, I agree with ALL that stuff! Do let us know how your talk with Knowlton comes out. (Obviously not expecting instant results.)

As to which band I hate more? U$C, but it's close...

Stanfurd is pathetic. They had some good-sounding moments, decades ago, but their shows have always been lame. Maybe, to some, it was funny for awhile, but it got old and never recovered. What I really hate about them is their sense of privileged entitlement.

U$C Band is just a bunch of a-holes. An a-hole culture created and perpetuated by their director.

What I seriously LIKE about both bands is that these two schools are our two biggest rivals and they have bands like that representing them! The bands actually embody the negative stereotypes of the two schools! That's awesome! Makes us want to beat them all the more.

The long-time director of the U$C Band (I believe he is still there) created and fostered this culture, going back well over forty years. There are horror stories from the mid-late '70s. I have no idea why anybody would want to be so "*****ish". To speculate, maybe he sees the band as embodying the culture of their team, where they are going to "march" over their opponents, taking no prisoners.

It's bad sportsmanship.

Self loathing? lol how?

As far as the SC band goes, isn't this stuff as far as alternating play and so forth negotiated between band directors beforehand?

I'm sure the SC band is full of d*cks. I'm not questioning that. I'm just saying if this stuff is negotiated before, then someone is obviously failing at their job or, like I said before, someone from SC is just being a huge ******bag.

Go ahead and ban them! But I don't want to see a post on this forum that is all "wah wah wah" when they don't let us in the Coliseum or assign us to the Peristyle.

Ok, wait a minute. I'm a cal fan. Class of 93. But...mutual respect? You know...the majority of posts on this board are complaints about how nearly every school or their fans in the Pac12 "disrespects" us. If its not the horrendous Oregon fans, its the Husky fans. If its not fUCLA then its its the dickery of another team. When did we get so freaking sensitive?

When I was a student, we would slingshot oranges at Stanfurd's band. When we played SC, we would chant "that...is the only song you know...its boring and its slow...we really wish you'd go". Do they still do this?

If there is an apology to be given, its to Bryce's family, not us. And, given the comments on here, I'd say its deserved. But dude - you want to have security escort the USC band director out of the stadium? Come on bro.
