Sorry, but that's BS. Devon was a stud in HS (averaged nearly a triple double at Newark Memorial) and was far ahead of where Diallo currently is at a similar stage. I don't understand the flak he gets from some on this board. He didn't do anything to embarrass the program. He just simply didn't develop into the player many felt he could be.

That is a projection. Hardin was not very good at Cal. It is nothing personal. I think Diallo will be.

This is the greatest thread of all time.

Shocky, question, what happened recently with UCLA and Welsh that has them so nervous he might still come to Cal or even maybe Colorado?

Cal is going to be top 15 this year I can feel it.

is tw interested in going away to college or does he want to stay home in la?

can tw envision his potential role in alford's 5 wild wings offense with no pg?

in watching ucla's practices, does he really think bryce alford is a legit d1 pg?

do the ucla players truly like each other in the same way that the cal bb players have bonded with one another as a family?

how deep is tw's trust & respect for gregg gottlieb, the 1st coach from a bigtime program to offer & encourage his continued development?

how important is monty's track record of developing big men with his 2 post offensive scheme that is run thru the bigs?

is it acceptable to the welsh family that it is a documented fact that alford protected/enabled a convicted rapist in order to win a few more games and then offered an insincere forced apology (as required by a besieged ucla ad) more than a decade later?

is tw comfortable that cal bb's coaching staff will be in good hands, travis decuire most likely, should monty step down sometime in the future? (it should be noted that montgomery has never indicated any indication he plans to retire, that myth is perpetuated by competing coaches that have been repeatedly clownpunked by monty's xxx's & ooo's)

does thomas really want to study economics (ucla & stanford do not offer an undergraduate biz major) or does he want to potentially earn his degree at the #2 nationally ranked haas business school thereby saving him the expense & time of completing a cal, stanford or ivy league mba program down the road?

In a press conference last year when asked about retirement, before the questioner could finish the sentence, Monty said he would coach till 81!

With Monty's verve and energy and almost unmatched ability to orchestrate a team, he consistently gets the most from his players (3 Pac-10/12 Players of the Year in the last 4 years). Clearly those in the know (Sean Rooks, father of Kameron and former NBA player for about a decade, and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, of the Sacramento Kings and older brother of Roger) understand the great opportunity it is for an aspiring basketballer to play under and learn from Monty.

One of the reasons why the Moute and Rooks signings a BIG deal - NBA'ers have a pretty good understanding of which coach in the Pac-12 (and possibly the nation) is the best at helping coach up talent. Slick Rick may be great for SHOWCASING that talent but Monty is a monster at coaching up.

As will be evidenced when Jorge makes a roster this season.

Who is Slick Rick? Pitino? I thought it was Slimy Sean (in the PAC12 at least) as king of showcasing.

On what basis? Have you seen any more of Diallo play than you had seen of Hardin prior to either of them playing at the college level?

I couldn't tell you how good or not good Diallo might be, but the general tone I've gotten from looking at his recruitment is that he is more of a Plan B guy for Pac 12 level schools and that he has a lot to work on to develop his game for the college level.

diallo has actionable offers from cal, ucla, usc, colorado & oregon, the upper tier of the pac 12 (excluding arizona)

idrissa diallo with his still not fully developed skills (due to growing up in senegal focusing upon soccer like his dad) but 4/5 star talent/athleticisim is considered one of the elite blue chip bigs on the west coast by major bb programs & their coaching staffs

last weekend sacramento's grant hs cameron oliver & his dad doyle made their 1st official visit, a fun & informative trip to cal

oliver is 6'8", 205 lbs with the frame to add another 20-30 lbs of muscle & missed his jr yr due to an acl tear

the bears interest was solidified by cameron's spectacular breakout performance at the recent elite 50 (a showcase for sacramento talent during which malik pope broke the same leg for the 2nd time during warm ups) with travis decuire making the initial contacts

oliver creates tremendous match up nightmares for opponents with his dominating size & consistent 15+ ft jumper for a 3 yet supreme quicks & thundering dunks as a 4

the bears staff has outlined an academic gameplan for cameron to be both ncaa & cal eligible which will involve achieving solid sat scores and raising both his chemistry & english grades to elevate his current almost 3.0 gpa

my take is that oliver (who has the relentless under control fiery edge/competitiveness like the cal monster class) decides to wait until the spring signing period (for an actionable firmed up cal offer) to continue working both in the classroom and the bb court that the bears will be in the driver's seat as his dad doyle & family value cal's close proximity & world class education to open doors down the road

I just really, really like his soccer-influenced footwork, size, and athleticism. Only seen him in higlights, never in a game. Don't care what other schools or other people think. Hardin never developed footwork and that is why he did not do much. I remember Hardin looking wild and out of control in his high school video, but it has been a few years, so that might be revisionist thinking.

I saw Hardin play in high school, he could run the floor, had quick feet, could block shots and dunk. He did not need anything else for that level of competition (and was coached not to). A 4.0 student with a great attitude, he stuck with his commitment to Cal even after a late push by Stanford.

He continued to grow in the year before his enrollment at Cal (his Scout profile listed him as 6'9" 210) and that affected his coordination somewhat. The biggest thing was all the injuries he had at Cal, including a foot injury much like the one that has impacted Kreklow. I also feel like he did not get good post coaching at Cal.

Actually, USC just took Canadian Jabari Craig and has one scholarship left that they are saving for Stanley Johnson. Oregon just recently offered, but probably would not have if they weren't uncertain about Ray Kasongo. Colorado seems to be the favorite for Tory Miller, and they only have one scholarship left. It's probably Cal, UCLA, or Oregon for Diallo.

The West Coast class of 2014 is very thin in posts, which works to Diallo's advantage. He did not play this past summer and looked rusty and rough when he tried to go in the Spring. There's a lot of mixed opinion as to how good Diallo ultimately becomes. One school of thought is that his instincts, skills, and basketball IQ are too far behind for his athleticism to matter. That said, he's a pretty good athlete and has a body, which leads you to believe he's got upside. I don't mind using a scholarship on him, but he's a developmental player, not someone I would expect immediate contributions from.

Just guessing, that it relates to the interests of the (undoubtedly overwhelmingly male) fans of the men's basketball team. Besides, there are many posts on this board celebrating the world-wide fame of our beloved educational institution; and these particular images had gone viral long before they appeared on this board.

Just got home from the public scrimmage.

All five frosh will help this year, barring injury, of course.

Singer was stunningly good. He moved the ball and helped whichever group with whom he played to be better. Cobbs and Wallace and Galvin were not nearly as effective in making their teammates better. I have to swallow my rashness not to say even more effusive things about him. He likely has the best passing instincts on the team. And he did not embarrass himself on defense. Indeed, on one sequence he picked the guy who was bringing up the ball in the back court and got it to a teammate for a lay in. He was a reluctant shooter, but when he did, from downtown and driving to the basket, he was close to perfect. At the free throw line he was perfect. He protects the bell quite effectively when dribbling. Has excellent timing about going to the hole when overplayed to one side. He is a big point guard, about the 6'-5" at which he is listed.

About the only criticism I can think of is that Sam is not very tan, and what is that, coming from Florida!

Mathews quickly showed why Monty has remarked that in earlier scrimmages that he has frequently been the best scorer on the floor. He comes off screens well and gets up a pretty, balanced jump shot in a hurry. It finds the mark more often than not. Like Singer, he makes his free throws, 3 for 3 when fouled on a 3 point attempt. He led all scorers today. Cobbs did school him a few times with short turnaround jumpers, but Mathews scrapped and he plays strong. He did pick Cobbs once in the back court.

Both Mathews and Singer will see major minutes all year.

Bird was a bit less impressive in results than these two, but that is not to say he was unimpressive. His talent is extraordinary and he will only get better. Though Monty started Kreklow, I cannot imagine that Kreklow can hold off Bird for long.

Roger Moute a Bidias actually scored the first basket for his side in the scrimmage, on a nice short drive and bank shot to the right side. He is thin, but really active and plays above the rim. He will be a far better defender than any big we brought off the bench last year. He is a quick jumper with a good sense of timing. I wince when I write this, because I like Behrens a lot, but I would take Roger over him right now. He may be two inches shorter than Christian, but he plays much taller.

Rooks is huge and apparently smart. A bit soft right now, with weak (but accurate) shots. He has good hands and still takes up a lot of space at 7'+ and 260 pounds. He looks as though he will get better daily. He was 3 0f 4 from the foul line, and none of the makes was a fluke. He, also, will play right away. I imagine that, having lost about 70 pounds in a hurry, he will now be building up his strength

This is a far better first year group than Monty has yet had at Cal.

Shocky deserves some props for labeling these 5 the Monster Class.

Go Bears!
